Under the general supervision of the Chief, Linguistic Services and Publishing (C/LSP), and the direct supervision of the Head, Linguistic Production, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

1. Publications
• Process publishing requests and assign editing and layout tasks accordingly;

• Perform publishing assistant tasks: Typeset publications using Adobe InDesign; perform graphic design work (designs cover and layout) using Adobe Illustrator; select photos and edit them using Photoshop; produce camera-ready proofs for reproduction and the PDF for posting online using Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Professional;

• Discuss layout requirements, design and other publication specifications with the Head, Linguistic Production; ensure that any illustrations, graphs, maps, legends, photos and captions comply with submission standards; provide author Departments with specific instructions on correct format and submission procedures as necessary;

• Keep abreast of new tools and solutions in the field of publication software and provide recommendation to the Head of Linguistic Production; help to plan and prepare the implementation of new tools and innovative publishing solutions, including migration/conversion of existing publications;

• Assist the Linguistic Support Services Officer in quality-controlling e-Library record metadata and other library related tasks.

2. Administrative
• Assist Head, Linguistic Production with outsourcing contracts to external editors and graphic designers;

• Process all printing orders, ensure quality control of the final products, coordinate and oversee the delivery of documents and follow up with Departments. Responsible for coordinating and overseeing the services provided by the external printing service providers;

• Plan and coordinate the service delivery, overall workflow and administrative arrangements;

• Serve as a backup for correspondence and other documentation processing tasks;

• Provide administrative support in relation to recruitment of temporary staff and interns.

3. Other duties
• Answer queries such as but not limited to: editing services, disclaimers, ISBN requests, DOI numbers, joint publications, permission/copyright queries; external requests to publish their research reports;

• Assist with maintaining the roster of external editors and publishing, graphic design and printing consultants/companies;

• Perform other related duties, as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Completed secondary school education or equivalent secretarial, commercial or technical studies with corresponding diploma.
Experience
• A minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in the production (layout) of technical and general information publications, of which two years of experience at the international level, preferably acquired in an international organization belonging to the UN Common System.

• Experience with editorial practices of WMO or a comparable international organization is desirable.

• Broad experience with all aspects of the document and publication production chain will be considered a distinct advantage.

Other requirements
• Demonstrated competencies in desktop publishing.

• Must have demonstrated skills in publications management.

• Familiarity with the working methods employed for the preparation of documents for international conferences and meetings.

• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator.

• Knowledge of other desktop publishing and graphic design software and of documentation management systems would be an advantage.

• Ability to work independently and effectively under heavy pressure.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations.

• Sense of diplomacy, tact and discretion.

• Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Working knowledge of French. Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)

Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.

SALARY
Annual net base salary on initial appointment and after deduction for staff assessment is: CHF 86,236
