GENERAL BACKGROUND
WHO ARE WE?
The Danish Refugee Council assists refugees and internally displaced persons across the globe: we provide emergency aid, fight for their rights, and strengthen their opportunities for a brighter future. We work in conflict-affected areas, along the displacement routes, and in the countries where refugees settle. In cooperation with local communities, we strive for responsible and sustainable solutions. We work toward successful integration and – whenever possible – for the fulfilment of the wish to return home. The Danish Refugee Council was founded in Denmark in 1956 and has since grown to become an international humanitarian organization with more than 7,000 staff and 8,000 volunteers. Our vision is a dignified life for all displaced. All of our efforts are based on our value compass: humanity, respect, independence and neutrality, participation, and honesty and transparency.
The assistance programme of the Danish Refugee Council in Serbia has grown out of DRC’s comprehensive interventions since 1993, responding to the large-scale forced migrations resulting from the wars in the former Yugoslav Republics triggered by the dissolution of the former SFRY. These included emergency response programs, social rehabilitation, shelter/WASH, education, income generation, capacity building, repatriation to Croatia and return to Kosovo, as well as access to health care, human rights/legal assistance and psycho-social support. Ever since DRC has had the advantage of acting regionally and assisting vulnerable displaced families who opt for repatriation/return or local integration and enhancement of livelihood conditions as well as persons likely in need of humanitarian protection and access to basic rights.
In 2015, DRC Serbia expanded its programming and launched new emergency relief operations, in response to the so-called Europe migration crisis, providing protection and assistance to persons of concern and supporting the Government of Serbia in tackling migration management challenges and responding to the increasing humanitarian needs. DRC has been engaged in health, psychosocial assistance, shelter, cash-based assistance and WASH interventions aiming at improving reception conditions in various Transit, Reception and Asylum centers in the country, protection, including child protection, and livelihood support.
