The Green Climate Fund (GCF)—a critical element of the historic Paris Agreement—is the world’s largest climate fund mandated to support low-emission, climate-resilient development pathways. As an operating entity of the financial mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), GCF contributes to the goal of keeping an average global temperature rise well below two degrees Celsius.
The Fund seeks to engage a Research Analyst Consultant to carry out the tasks, duties, and responsibilities, deliver the set deliverables, and provide support to the hiring unit as detailed below. The consultant will join the GCF team on HQ-based. The assignment is for an initial 230 days over a 12-month period.

Role
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Research Analyst will be responsible for assisting the Executive Director to conduct research, analyze information and maintain briefing notes and information databases. The scope as outlined below is a broad menu of areas of focus. Specific priorities will be set by the Executive Director or delegate on an ongoing basis.

Duties and responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Research Analyst will work in consultation with staff within existing organizational structures. The consultant will work on the following areas:

  • Independently conduct general and targeted research and quantitative and qualitative analysis on a wide range of climate finance and sustainable development topics, including internally and externally sourced materials
  • Prepare briefing notes and maintain and update information and databases, including those relevant to the Executive Directors’ external engagements, in a range of in formats, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Coordinate with relevant teams across the GCF to compile initial inputs for briefing notes and information databases
  • Provide quality control and standardization over briefing notes and information databases utilized by the Executive Director

Required experience and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental sciences, social sciences, business management, economics, finance, sustainable development, or any other related field. A Master’s Degree would be a distinct advantage;
  • At least 7 years experience with a Master’s level degree or 9 years experience with a Bachelor’s level degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience with projects and policy in an international context; experience with international organizations is highly desirable
  • Familiarity of multilateral climate funds, project financing, and UNFCCC framework would be an advantage
  • Exceptional skills in research, analytical thinking, communication and business writing skills
  • Ability to articulate complex issues verbally and in writing in a concise manner
  • Exceptional organizational skills, ability to facilitate communication between various levels of management and work independently to meet deadlines, ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail
  • Strong competency in the use of standard software such as Microsoft Suite
  • Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of another UN language is an advantage
