Mission and objectives

As the lead United Nations agency on international development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. The Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) is UNDP’s primary knowledge and advisory hub for offices represented in the 18 countries and territories in the Europe and Central Asia region. UNDP has been working in conflict, post-conflict and politically complex settings in the Europe and Central Asia region for more than 25 years and strives to strengthen our collective efforts for conflict prevention and achieving sustainable peace. UNDP leverages its position as the SDG integrator within the development system, and its pivotal role across the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus, while operationalizing a shift towards more proactive and pre-emptive Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding (CPPB) strategies and measures. Understanding the causes and drivers of conflict, mapping key stakeholders and locating entry-points for peace are critical to preventing conflict and promoting social cohesion.

Context

The online volunteer will support the work of the Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Cluster within the Governance and Peacebuilding Team. The key thematic areas of work covered by the Conflict Prevention & Peacebuilding cluster include: ensuring conflict-sensitive programming; supporting anticipation, foresight, and data analytics; addressing hate speech and divisive narratives; preventing violent extremism; supporting confidence-building measures; reducing polarization; easing inter-community tensions; strengthening social cohesion; leveraging digital tools for peacebuilding and advancing agendas such as Youth Peace and Security, Women Peace and Security, Climate Peace and Security, among others.

Task Description

Under the direct supervision of the Anticipation and Prevention Programme Specialist, the online volunteer will: – Contribute desk research and a mapping of relevant stakeholders to support the development of a social cohesion knowledge product. -Draft (10) two-pager country fact sheets analysing social cohesion challenges – including polarisation, civic space, hate speech, and disinformation, migration and gender-related issues – to inform evidence-based programming. -Contribute desk research to the drafting of a programme concept note on insider mediation tailored for the Europe and Central Asia region.
