The incumbent will be responsible to provide:

• Substantive inputs to Arab Risk Monitor, in particular the subnational and georeferenced data.
• Support for the development of the training modules on Risk Informed Policy Making.
• Support for Trends and Impact VIII Publication.
• The required research and other tasks in a high quality and timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA unescwa.org) forms part of the United Nations Secretariat and, like the other regional commissions, operates under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA comprises 20 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries, a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and its subsidiary bodies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

This position is in Cluster 6: ‘Governance and conflict prevention’ of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA – unescwa.org). Cluster 6 acts as a pioneer and multi-stakeholder regional platform for deliberation, consensus-building, peer learning and policy solutions to ensure participation and partnerships for governance and institution building, and to enhance the capacity of member States in conflict or post-conflict settings on conflict prevention for more just, equitable and inclusive societies in the Arab region.

Under the supervision of the Cluster Leader of the Governance and Conflict Prevention Cluster and based on the guidance of the Office of the Executive Secretary, the individual contractor will be responsible for the following:

• Assists in identifying and monitoring substantive aspects of the work of the cluster, in particular updating the database for particular indices.
• Selects and evaluates a variety of documents, summarize pertinent material, collects and analyses data and prepares background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports.
• Collects data from different sources on socioeconomic, institutional, and environmental indicators.
• Performs data mining, data cleaning, merging and imputation of missing values techniques for the Risk Monitor Project, in particular as regards subnational data and georeferenced data.
• Implement descriptive statistics analysis and correlation analysis using statistical software as Python, R, and others.
• Conduct statistical tests and analyses using different statistical software such as Python, R, and others.
• Perform data modelling techniques that contribute to the selection and evaluation of a variety of indicators for different workstreams in Cluster 6 using Python and other statistical software.
• Implement data visualization using software as Power-Bi, Tableau and others.
• Prepares a variety of inputs, presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and/or diagrams for information in order to facilitate the in-depth analysis of the retrieved information by the supervisor and other users.
• Perform other related tasks as requested by the supervisor.

• Research Support in the form of written contributions to policy briefs, technical papers and other publications
• Data gathering and visualization
• Power Point presentations

Qualifications/special skills

A first level university degree in social sciences or other related field is required.

For this position, no previous work experience is required.
The following skills are desirable:

– Research experience to undertake data mining, data cleaning, merging and imputation;
– Ability to perform descriptive statistics analysis and correlation analysis using statistical software such as Python, R, and others;
– Ability to conduct statistical tests and analyses using different statistical software such as Python, R, and others;
– Knowledge to perform data modelling techniques that contribute to the selection and evaluation of a variety of indicators using Python and other statistical software;
– Background knowledge on the impact and prevention of conflict as well as transboundary challenges;
– Ability to implement data visualization using software as Power-Bi, Tableau and others.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required.

Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
