Research Assistant

 

Overview

To undertake qualitative research using a political-economy approach on peatland governance in the Mawas Conservation Area, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, supported by a Small Research Activity grant from the Australian Centre for Agricultural Research.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

Research

  • To assist the primary data collection for political economy analysis to understand the influential actors and the state of governance in the Mawas peat dome at both the national and provincial levels. The data will include:
  1. Explore the existing co-governance structure in the context of Mawas peat dome, both formal and informal.
  2. Conducting social network survey on peatland governance, including semi-structure interviews with stakeholders.
  3. Conducting interviews with stakeholders at the national, provincial level, and district level.
  • To assist in coordinating the primary data collection at the national, provincial and district levels including making interview appointment
  • To assist in the data management of the research, including transcribing and translating from Bahasa Indonesia to English manually or using relevant software.
  • To contribute to report writing, these include:
  1. Final report
  2. One journal article
  3. One blog
  4. One proposal for the next ACIAR project

Project management

  • Preparation of validation workshop at Palangkaraya and Co-organize the outcomes and reporting from the event.

Other Responsibilities

  • Identify and mitigate potential risks within your work area.
  • Take reasonable care of own occupational health and safety and that of others as obliged by CIFOR-ICRAF’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and cooperate with CIFOR-ICRAF in complying with requirements under any statutory health and safety provisions of relevant Country laws.
  • Participate in Climate Change, Energy, and Low Carbon Development Team and Indonesia Country Program projects as may be required.

 

Education, knowledge and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, natural resource management, forestry, or environmental sciences.
• Strong computer skills in database management, text analysis (preferably NVivo and/or MAXQDA), word processing and other relevant Microsoft Office applications.
• Minimum of three years of working experience in research organizations preferred.
• Good English language skills, both oral and written, are essential.
• Familiarity with forests and climate change/REDD+ is helpful.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and capacity to work in a team.

Terms and conditions

• This is a Locally Recruited Staff (LRS) position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency, commensurate with skills and experience.
• The appointment will be for 1 (one) year, inclusive of a three-month probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
• The duty station will be in Bogor.
