Org. Setting and Reporting
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) forms part of the United Nations Secretariat and, like the other regional commissions, operates under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA comprises 21 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonisation of sectoral policies for member countries, a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialised agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and its subsidiary bodies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. This position is in Cluster 6: ‘Governance and conflict prevention’ of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA – unescwa.org). Cluster 6 acts as a pioneer and multi- stakeholder regional platform for deliberation, consensus-building, peer learning and policy solutions to ensure participation and partnerships for governance and institution building, and to enhance the capacity of member States in conflict or post-conflict settings on conflict prevention for more just, equitable and inclusive societies in the Arab region. The Research Assistant typically reports to an officer or head of unit under the overall guidance of the Cluster Lead.
Responsibilities
Within the delegation of authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
• Assists in identifying appropriate indicators, methodologies, and data sources to design, develop, and maintain various indices relevant to the design of indices
• Researches, extracts, consolidates, and processes data required for building indices using various tools
• Analyzes and evaluates data sets for accuracy, clarity, and validity
• Monitors and researches electronic print and oral media in order to identify relevant information for specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues
• Maintains a database to facilitate the search and location of the required documentation
• Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analyzing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, library, Internet, etc.
• Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers • Conducts initial research projects under the guidance of senior officers
• Provides ad hoc translation support and/or summarizes relevant media reports
• Contributes to the preparation and updating of background documents, press statements, pamphlets or other public awareness campaigns to educate public on any specific issues
• Alerts senior officers to any relevant development or trends taking place in their respective field of responsibility
• Performs other related tasks as required
