The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. This position is located in the Division of Gender Affairs. at ECLAC, Santiago, Chile. The Research Assistant reports to the Social Affairs Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

• Researches, compiles and organizes information and technical data on women autonomy and gender equality specific programmes/projects and related topics.
• Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analyzing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
• Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system.
• Assists in the evaluation and examination of data for accuracy, clarity and validity.
• Participates in and assists in the organization and follow up of intergovernmental meeting,
technical missions and activities.
• Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
• Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications.
• Reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases on gender issues.
• Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
• Collects organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information.
• Assists in the coordination and set up of press briefings, press statements, pamphlets or other public awareness campaigns to educate public on any specific issue.
• Performs other related work as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job – Specific Qualification

Relevant training in social sciences or economics is desirable.

Work Experience

At least 3 years of experience in collecting and researching across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to 1 for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.

Experience with countries of the region and on gender analysis is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Spanish is a working language of ECLAC. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in Spanish required; and knowledge English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

• This position is temporarily available until 22 December 2023. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
