This position is located in the Secretariat of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (the Escazú Agreement) at the Policies for Sustainable Development Unit of the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division.
Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Policies for Sustainable Development Unit the Research Assistant will support the discharging of secretariat functions in respect of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean and be responsible for the following duties:
• Supports the servicing of bodies and meetings of the Agreement
• Researches, extracts and compiles basic information, legal and technical data in relation to the Escazú Agreement
• Assists in the review of legal documents, case law, instruments, or other material
• Assists in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports, legislative texts, teaching materials in the field of international and national environmental legislation
• Reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases.
• Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
• Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
• Participates in coordination meetings and provides assistance in support of planning and implementation activities/processes
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
Relevant training in Law is desirable.
Work Experience
At least three years of experience in collecting and researching across social and economic development or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to 1 for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
Experience in researching legal and judicial instruments is required.
Experience in research in the areas of law, sustainable development, environment or related area is desirable.
Experience in supporting data bases/clearing houses is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat and Spanish is a working language of ECLAC. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in Spanish required. Knowledge English is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
