PURPOSE

You will ensure expert research and drafting skills are available for the East and Sout East Asia and Pacific Regional Office during all stages of the production of Amnesty’s annual report entry on the human rights situation in China (including Hong Kong).

You shall also be responsible for any additional research or contribution necessary for the satisfactory completion of another country annual entry or to the regional overview where China is substantially referenced.

Consultancy start and end date: 09/10/2023 – 19/01/2024

Deadline for all applications: 21/09/2023

Rate: GBP 225.00 per day

Location: London, other locations will also be considered

OBJECTIVES AND DELIVERABLES

As drafter, the Consultant shall be responsible for:

  • Having full clarity and, if needed, amend the annual report country entry outline
  • Providing the draft country entry, with reasonable collaboration with any identified internal contributor(s), according to guidance from the IS and by the expected deadline set out in the Master Schedule.
  • Presenting content from a human rights perspective and broadly conforms with Amnesty International’s policy positions.
  • Meeting other core standards in the Quality Assurance Framework.
  • Conforming with the specific guidance for writing Annual Report entries, including with respect to structure and content.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven experience of working in a human rights research role, or demonstrated responsibilities undertaking research on human rights or related issues;
  • Specialist knowledge and preferably first-hand experience of China an in-depth understanding of the nature of key human rights concerns, as well as political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues in them;
  • Ability to understand and express ideas in English and Chinese in a fluent, clear and concise way, both orally and in writing; draft text in a variety of styles, e.g., documents such as substantial reports, government correspondence and media and action materials;
  • Experience of balancing autonomous/self-led research work with working in a team, and understanding of the importance of efficient communications for the coordination and effective functioning of teams;
