Duties and Responsibilities
Background and Objective The Sultanate of Oman has pursued ambitious economic and developmental strategies since the mid-1970s to achieve sustainable economic growth and enhance the quality of life for its citizens. These strategies aim to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, focusing on economic diversification to reduce reliance on oil revenues by developing sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and technology. Oman places significant importance on financial transparency, technological development, and preparing for the fourth industrial revolution. Efforts include creating a comprehensive statistical information system and conducting censuses and surveys to provide necessary indicators until 2030. These initiatives aim to foster fair competitive markets and contribute to the welfare of its citizens. The objective of the assignment is to assist in designing, developing, and maintaining indices, as well as performing statistical analyses on large datasets to generate insights that inform strategic decisions and support the goals of the Oman projects. Duties & Responsibilities The individual contractor on index development and analysis is expected to perform the following tasks: • Index Development and Maintenance: Assist in identifying appropriate indicators, methodologies, and data sources to design, develop, and maintain various indices relevant to the Oman project. • Data Collection and Compilation: Research, extract, consolidate, and process data required for the indices using various tools. • Data Analysis: Analyze and evaluate data sets for accuracy, clarity, and validity, and adjust reported data as needed to ensure the integrity of the indices. • Index Validation: Conduct validity and reliability tests on indices to ensure their robustness and credibility. • Reporting and Presentation: Prepare reports, presentations, tables, graphs, and charts to visualize index data insights and support the project coordinator with comprehensive information. • Research Support: Provide research assistance on projects, compiling information from multiple sources such as databases, libraries, and the internet to support the indices. • Documentation: Prepare abstracts, summary briefs, and descriptions for inclusion in various documents, articles, and publications related to the indices. • Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with team members, stakeholders, and other experts to ensure the indices are relevant, accurate, and aligned with project goals. • Performs other related work as required by the project coordinator.
Qualifications/special skills
A BAchelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Business Administration or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 2 years of experience in collecting, researching and analyzing data is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
