The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions. The Department has embarked on a series of reforms to reconceptualize security as an enabler of UN programmes within acceptable risk. New strategic initiatives focus on improving the quality of evidence-based planning and foresight scenarios required to strengthen UNDSS response in the field and ensure continued programmatic delivery and support to UN organizations in complex emergencies and deteriorating security situations. This position is located in the Operational Resilience Service (ORS) within the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security, UNDSS. ORS provides specialist support to UNDSS’s field operations enhancing the Department’s ability to absorb and recover from shocks, stresses, and challenges while maintaining essential functions during any occurrence. ORS pursues a proactive and data-led approach to develop and implement innovative ideas, methodologies, and solutions to an ever-evolving global security landscape. The Security Coordination Officer – Risk Support will report to the Programme Officer for Strategic Innovation under the supervision of the Senior Programme Officer within ORS. In this role, you will help UNDSS’s field operations become more effective, efficient, and adaptable, thus contributing directly or indirectly to peace and security, human rights, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Security Coordination Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Supports the development of risk management tools and data-driven approaches to detect and interpret early signals, emerging security trends, and the analysis of multi-dimensional threats that may impact security. • Prepares, reviews, implements, and supports security planning, security risk management documents and risk management-based solutions through innovation and creativity. Participates in meetings, committees, and task forces, prepares papers on security issues, delivers briefings, and provides responses, as needed. • Supports the management of security-related projects and programs, including as part of the UNDSS Digital Transformation Strategy, prioritizing work to meet deadlines and following defined processes, policies, procedures, and guidance, fostering alignment with colleagues and across organizations. • Monitors and contributes to activities that relate to the implementation and evaluation of preparedness and compliance; drives results that help support efficiency and effectiveness of operations. • Enhances communication and trust through active collaboration, consultation and exchanges with UN agencies, funds, programmes, and organizations, as well as other internal and external stakeholders, for information sharing, coordination of responses, provision of security briefings, taking into account operational activities and risks. • Conducts surveys and assessments, creatively leveraging tools and processes, identifying and recommending the most simple, reasonable, effective and efficient security solutions, including when there is incomplete, contradictory and/or fluid information • Actively implements departmental approaches to mainstreaming gender, diversity and inclusion into all aspects of the work as well as ensuring the implementation of people-centred security risk management approaches considering specific threats or vulnerabilities of personnel and adapting practices and measures in support of diversity and inclusion. • Performs other functions as directed.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business or public administration, political/social science, psychology, criminal justice, law, international relations, security management or a related field is required. A relevant first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree may be substituted with a diploma from a police or military education institution, college or academy obtained over a minimum of a three-year period.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, humanitarian affairs, disarmament affairs, conflict analysis, crime or terrorism prevention, security, risk or disaster or emergency management and preparedness in the public or private sector areas responsible for responding to emergency situations that directly impact security is required. Of these, two years of experience in planning, design, implementation, or review of security programmes or security risk management measures related to operations impacted by insecurity is required. One (1) year of experience in field operations is desirable. Experience in project management, data analytics or security analysis is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
