This post is located in the Security and Safety Service. The Security and Safety Service is responsible for providing security to delegates, staff, visiting dignitaries and other visitors. Under the overall command of the Chief of Service, the Security Inspector is required to perform armed security functions and reports directly to the Assistant Chief of Service.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Security Inspector is responsible for the following duties:

• Consults with and advises the Assistant Chief of all matters and activities of concern planned or taking place within the UN complex.
• Advises and makes recommendations in the formulation of goals and objectives of the Service.
• Ensures that the established goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with prescribed priorities, time limitations and financial conditions.
• Manages all responsibilities in assigned area.
• Recommends and advises on matters concerning the organization and management of the activities of his/her assigned responsibilities.
• Determines work schedules and make adjustments thereto in light of changing requirements; plans coverage for special events, VIP visits in consultation with the Assistant Chief of the Service, officials of Secretariat departments and external security representatives.
• Supervises subordinate supervisory personnel and oversees the performance of all other staff under command.
• Conducts regular briefings with supervisory personnel under command.
• Counsels and coaches staff as required.
• Ensures that all posts are properly and effectively supervised and staffed by making adjustments in light of operational requirements.
• Assures the availability of all relevant resources to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the section/unit.
• Reviews the recommendations of subordinate supervisors on candidates for recruitment and selection of staff for higher level positions and lateral reassignments, and prepares final recommendations for approval by the Chief of Service.
• Ensures that all incidents and complaints reported are effectively addressed and appropriate measures are taken to curtail reoccurrences.
• Assumes command of emergency or heightened security situations until properly relieved.
• Assists in the preparation of budget proposals and performance reports.
• Manages and processes overtime and attendance of personnel under command.
• Performs all other related duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent. Must have passed the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT).

Work Experience

Eighteen (18) years of experience in security and safety operations with the United Nations or other similar international organization is required.

Experience in operational security planning, including the deployment and scheduling of security personnel, is desirable.

Experience in the application of UN rules and regulations as they relate to attendance, performance management and discipline is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

A written assessment test may be administered to applicants followed by a competency based interview for the applicants who pass the written test.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Officers are required to be in possession of valid host country licenses, including but not limited to:
(1) Handgun License from the Police Department – City of New York (non-revoked); and
(2) Motor vehicle permit from the appropriate issuing authorities within the New York tri-state area.

• Officers are required to be in possession of a valid UN Weapons Permit, and meet and maintain all UN firearms qualification standards.
• They must be mentally and medically fit.
• All duties are performed in uniform; however, at times the officer may be required to perform duties in civilian clothes.

• An impeccable record for integrity and professional ethical standards is essential.
• Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.

• This position is temporarily available until 31 December 2023, with the possibility for extension subject to the continued absence of the regular incumbent. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
