The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization dedicated to supporting and promoting strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. To learn more please visit about GGGI web page.
The vast majority of GHG emissions from the waste sector are methane from the decay of organic matter in anaerobic conditions which represents 20% of total anthropogenic methane emissions. Methane is responsible for nearly half of global warming to date. Due to its short atmospheric lifetime and the availability of technologies, reducing methane gas can be a fast and cost-effective way to address climate change in the short term. However, most developing countries are not well equipped to tackle their methane emissions. They generally have weak data, policies and regulations, and lack of capacity to identify methane reduction initiatives to attract developers and investors for implementation.
Senegal has been very active at the policy level, notably with the development of a national strategy for the valorization of organic waste through biogas. However, up to now, no project has been implemented at a significant scale, whether it is biogas or other forms of aerobic treatment of organic waste (e.g., composting). The country, notably the private sector (food and agro-processing industries) is lacking the technical know-how and drive to develop such projects. In addition, access to finance is difficult and expensive.
In this context, GGGI, in collaboration with the Global Methane Hub is implementing the “Targeted interventions on methane emissions from waste in North and West Africa” Project in three African Countries: Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal. The 1 year project aims to provide tools to north and west African countries to decrease their methane emissions in the waste sector in 3 key areas: policy, data and investment.
In Senegal, the project consist in the development of an early investment pipeline for the reduction of methane from waste and effluents generated by the food and agro-processing industries in Senegal. Eventual implementation of the most promising projects through technical assistance, capacity building and facilitating access to finance would lead to direct reduction of methane emissions.
To achieve this, the project aims to deliver a set of outputs in Senegal:
In order to ensure a smooth implementation of the Project, a range of activities will be conducted by the GGGI Senegal Office, including a hired consultant to provide the relevant technical support.
Under the daily supervision of the Project Manager in Senegal, and with the general supervision of GGGI Senegal Country Representative and the Project Manager at GGGI Regional Office, the consultant/specialist will serve as the key support to the implementation of the project in Senegal. She/He will be involved in conducting the project’s desk research, daily activities, the reporting and monitoring of the implementation progress. The assignment is scheduled to last for 9 months and the consultant will be based in Dakar, at GGGI Senegal Office. The consultancy requires the delivery of quality work and constant commitment to achieving the projects’ deliverables. The assignment will include the following tasks that will contribute to the successful implementation of the project:
