PSI seeks a Senior Advisor I, Sanitation Market Systems to provide technical expertise on market development for the anticipated $25 million USAID-funded DRC Rural and Peri-Urban Sanitation Activity. The Activity will implement high impact interventions that strengthen sanitation markets to increase sustained access to and use of basic sanitation services. The activity will build sanitation markets through interventions in the areas of sector governance, demand creation, finance, and supply side strengthening. The Activity will prioritize local capacity building, including a transition of implementation responsibilities to local entities.

Salary Range:
$82,000 (MINIMUM) – $102,000 (MID-POINT) – $122,000 (MAXIMUM)

The annual base salary range reflected above is in USD.* We value transparency and have provided the full salary range for this role. Actual base salary compensation may vary and will be determined by factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, experience, internal equity, external market analysis, and other business factors permitted by law. Hiring above the mid-point of the range would not be typical in order to allow for potential future salary growth. *Candidates approved to receive expatriate packages will receive the appropriate compensation and allowance package. For candidates approved to be hired directly through the local PSI office, pay and benefits will be commensurate with the role and practices of the local office, including payment in local currency.

Your contributions

  • Technical: Lead or manage the development of the project’s technical activities and strategy to improve the demand and supply of affordable and higher quality sanitation products and services. Provide remote and in-country technical assistance to build capacity of network members to effectively deliver results in line with PSI and global best practices and the project’s technical strategy. Analyze evidence to determine best practices. Provide subject matter expertise in a specific technical area to the project. Lead development and implementation of project’s workplans in collaboration with program management team, such as in the design of sanitation products and service improvements. Manage report writing and development of technical guidance. Build the capacity of local organizations and institutions to drive expansion of the sanitation market.35% of Time
  • Representation: Engage with donors and represent PSI in external forums. Convey PSI’s work in written and verbal form. Participate in technical conversations and meetings convened by donors. Work with the private sector, civil society, and government partners to develop market-led solutions to market. Represent the Project on public-private sector issues at strategic planning meetings with collaborators and donors.20% of Time
  • Thought Leadership / Knowledge Management: Engage with other departments within PSI and contribute to internal decision-making as a subject matter expert. Engage externally to represent PSI and demonstrate technical expertise, capacity and experience in a specific technical area. Develop new tools/frameworks or content for publications (e.g. blogs, manuscripts, etc.) that demonstrate PSI’s technical expertise and experience in a specific technical area. 15% of Time
  • Fundraising: Contribute to new business development by writing or reviewing proposals, as well as identifying new funding opportunities. May lead large and / or complex bids. 10% of Time
  • Program Management: Manage technical workstreams. Provide subject matter expertise while ensuring that all milestones and deliverables are met. Oversee market landscaping and ensure that products and services are high-quality and affordable for the consumer. 10% of Time
  • People Management: May manage people; provide coaching and mentoring to staff. 10% of Time

What are we looking for?

  • Master’s Degree (or international equivalent) in a related field (e.g., MPH, MSc, MPP, MPA, MBA)
  • At least 10 years of related experience. Equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted.
  • Demonstrate advanced technical knowledge in relevant technical area such as private sector engagement, delivery of water and sanitation services, supply chain strengthening, or social entrepreneurship.
  • Experience bringing new products and services to market, including experience with user-centered design, R&D, financial modeling, and commercialization
  • Experience with data for decision making and using data to guide program and sales decisions
  • Experience with partnership development and knowledge of business development services sector and actors
  • Experience in developing and selling consumer sanitation products or durable goods products highly desirable;
  • Experience building capacity of government, private sector, and/or NGO actors
  • Ability to contribute to thought leadership in relevant technical area.
  • Ability to contribute to the internal and external body of evidence in relevant technical area.
  • Ability to provide technical assistance to PSI network.
  • Ability to share knowledge internally and externally with global communities of practice; represents PSI externally.
  • Ability to solve problems with creativity and analyze complex issues using in-depth evaluation of variable factors and who understands consumer needs and can find unique ways to develop existing/new products.
  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision and considerable latitude for independent judgement to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external colleagues. Able to work as a member of a team and independently.
  • Self-starter.
  • Ability to lead development of technical approach for proposals and identify potential new business opportunities.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate with colleagues and resolve conflicts.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365. Familiarity with a quantitative or qualitative data analysis program preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written in both English and French.
