Overview of CHAI’s Non-Communicable Diseases Program:
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory illness, and diabetes are now the leading global causes of death, surpassing communicable diseases. The WHO estimates over 41 million NCD-related deaths occur annually, with 85% in low- to middle-income countries. Access to diagnosis and treatment is often limited, leading to under-diagnosis, high health costs, and inequities in life expectancy and quality of life. Since 2021, CHAI has worked with governments to address these challenges by improving access to affordable diagnosis and care across Africa and Southeast Asia. In Ghana, CHAI kickstarted its NCD program, focusing on closing the Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) diagnosis gap by implementing multiple interventions to improve detection of early and strengthen timely diagnosis and treatment of T1D in children and adolescents. To further build our NCD portfolio in Ghana, CHAI intends to implement a broader project to expand access to essential care for diabetes and hypertension at the primary health care (PHC) level by strengthening health system enablers, generating demand, and shaping the market for prioritized PEN and PEN-Plus commodities.
