Position Overview
Launched in 1988, after the World Health Assembly passed a resolution to eradicate polio, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), along with its partners, has helped countries make incredible progress on polio eradication. Since the initiative was founded, more than 1.5 million lives have been saved and millions more have avoided devastating paralysis. Today, the global incidence of polio has decreased by 99.9%; however, reaching the last mile and eradicating the second human disease in history requires a strong push to the finish line. Resources are urgently needed to ensure that we can finish the job on polio and avoid dangerous backsliding amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The GPEI’s Resource Mobilization Group (RMG) conducts advocacy, resource mobilization and communications efforts to help the GPEI implement its resource mobilization and advocacy strategy. The RMG is Co-Chaired by WHO and UNICEF and includes six working groups. Members of the group include GPEI core partners (WHO, UNICEF, U.S. CDC, Rotary International, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi), civil-society partners, consultants and others. The United Nations Foundation serves as the RMG’s Secretariat. The Secretariat’s purpose is to provide operational and strategic support to the RMG Co-Chairs to ensure smooth functioning of the group.
Working closely with the RMG Operations Officer, WHO administrative staff, and UNF polio staff, the RMG Senior Associate will provide operational and logistical support to the RMG Secretariat. The Senior Associate will report to UNF’s Senior Director for Global Health.
