The EIB, the European Union’s bank, is seeking to recruit for its Operations Directorate (OPS), Baltic Sea and Northern Europe Department (BSNE), Corporates Division (2-CORP), Unit 1 at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a (Senior) Banker with German *.

This is a full-time position at grade 5/6 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

Please note that it is expected that after some time based in Luxembourg headquarters (minimum 1 year), the post will be allocated on a temporary basis to the EIB Berlin office for a period of max 6 years. The transfer will be implemented in line with the rules for the assignments to the external offices at that time. At the end of this period, the incumbent will be reintegrated within OPS/BSNE Department

Purpose

As a (Senior) Banker, you will contribute to the development and execution of the business plan by identifying, appraising, negotiating, and monitoring of corporate lending operations in the German market, according to EIB policies and procedures and with the objective to contribute to EU Policy goals.

Operating Network

You will be expected to manage fully independently, supported by your manager, a portfolio of corporate clients and act as the Bank’s main point of contact for these customers. You will report to the Head of Division and collaborate with colleagues in the BSNE-2 Division, throughout OPS and in other Directorates. You will also collaborate with the Head of Berlin Office, if required and in line with your role. You are also expected to coach more junior team members and support the Division’s strategy work including definition of market /sector strategies and product development.

Accountabilities

  • Originate and execute debt/corporate finance transactions.
  • Monitor closely corporate sector and trends in corporate lending products.
  • Develop, maintain and manage relationships with existing and future clients as well as with industry organisations, financial advisors, financiers and other parties.
  • Lead and monitor the appraisal process in close collaboration with other counterparts in the EIB Risk Management, the Projects Directorate, Legal Services, Compliance, Transaction Monitoring and Treasury, as appropriate.
  • Work closely with potential clients in order to develop financing structures that meet EIB Risk and Policy Guidelines on the one hand and support the clients’ financing strategy on the other.
  • Undertake financial and credit risk analysis.
  • Prepare risk-pricing proposals for the respective counterparts.
  • Draft financial reports, lending proposals and approval documents in cooperation with Project Team and facilitate the approval process at the appropriate approval level and in compliance with the approval procedures.
  • Lead and coordinate the negotiation process with the borrowers, external legal advisors and internal counterparts.
  • Follow-up and monitor the transactions: monitor the fulfilment of conditions in coordination with internal services and manage post-signature events in liaison key external and internal stakeholders in order to maintain the quality of the loan portfolio.
  • Participate in horizontal working groups and other initiatives (e.g. Knowledge Labs) as the Division’s representative, as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor), preferably in Finance/Economics
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the financial sector, preferably in corporate banking/finance
  • Experience in customer relationship management and proven ability to manage relationships at all levels of the client organisation
  • Strong knowledge of financial analysis as well as experience in corporate credit risk assessment
  • Very good understanding of project appraisal and execution processes and policies
  • Good knowledge of standard computer tools
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (*), with a good command of the other.
  • Excellent knowledge of German is required. A good command of any other EU language(s) will be considered an advantage.

(*) Unless stated explicitly as a required qualification, a good command of French is not a pre-requisite for hire. As both English and French are however official working languages of the EIB, proficiency in both languages is a pre-requisite for your future career development. Any language clause in your contract must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible for a promotion (either via the annual appraisal cycle or via an internal selection process). Proficiency is understood to mean the attainment of level 5 of the Inter Institutional language courses, corresponding to B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The Bank offers appropriate training support.
