POSITION TITLE: Senior Director, Finance and Controller

GROUP: Finance & Accounting

REPORTS TO: Chief Financial Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Senior Director will provide leadership and oversight in all financial matters, ensuring the integrity of financial operations and supporting the organization’s overall financial strategy. The Senior Director, Finance and Controller is responsible for overseeing the traditional accounting functions, payroll, treasury, financial reporting, and investment accounting. The role will liaise with all units in finance and accounting to provide comprehensive and timely financial updates to leadership, programs, and external clients by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points. The Senior Director, Finance and Controller will supervise a team of accounting professionals and ensure good financial controls. Travel between the Arlington Virginia and Little Rock, Arkansas offices will be required as well as limited international travel. The Senior Director, Finance and Controller is expected to be in the Little Rock office during the critical stages of the annual audit and will be expected to work on Eastern/Central Standard Time.

RESPONSIBLITIES:

Financial Strategy and Planning: Collaborate with the CFO to develop and implement the organization’s financial strategy, goals, and objectives. Assess financial risks and opportunities and recommend appropriate actions to drive financial sustainability and growth. Oversee investment accounting, including managing endowment activity, maintaining schedules of restricted assets, and fostering relationships with investment managers, custodians, and fund managers.

Financial Management and Reporting: Oversee all financial operations, including accounting, treasury, and tax compliance. Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, both internally and externally, in compliance with applicable regulations and accounting standards. Develop and maintain robust financial systems, policies, and procedures to safeguard organizational assets and ensure compliance with internal controls.

Team Leadership and Development: Lead and manage a team of finance professionals, providing guidance, coaching, and mentorship to foster a high-performing and motivated finance department. Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration within the finance team. Foster cross-functional collaboration with other departments to ensure effective financial management and support organizational goals.

Create a culture of change that aspires to support the organization in its needs. Compliance and Risk Management: Work with the budget and planning unit to finalize NICRA rates based upon the information in the ERP system and ensure all cost pools and allocations are CAS compliant. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and donor requirements in financial operations and reporting. Implement and maintain effective risk management practices, identifying and mitigating financial risks to protect the organization’s assets and reputation.

Liaise with external auditors, regulatory authorities, and donors on financial matters as necessary. Coordinate and oversee annual institutional audit and preparation of annual 990 tax returns, Act in accordance with Policies and Procedures relating to bank accounts, corporate and charitable registrations, and coordination with the Arkansas Secretary of State.

QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Minimum 10 years’ experience in international development in finance/accounting. In-depth understanding of international development projects, particularly those funded by the US government (USG). Must be familiar with USG contractual and financial requirement and CAS compliance. Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. A master’s degree in international business, accounting or finance preferred.

Good interpersonal skills and ability to work across diverse cultures, demonstrating culturally sensitive. Ability to easily collaborate with diverse groups. Good analytical skills. Ability and willingness to travel internationally and domestically. The ability to work proactively and to prioritize on a day-to-day basis to resolve issues associated with a demanding international organization. The ability to maintain confidentiality is essential. Supervisory experience of professional financial employees required. Corporate accounting/public accounting experience is a plus, but not required.
