Both the IEA and the OECD seek opportunities to work with an increasing number of non-member countries of growing importance to the world economy. The Agency aims to foster the contribution of the energy sector to economic development and environmental sustainability across the globe.

The main responsibilities of the Senior Gas Analyst will be to oversee the medium term market and investment analysis of natural gas as well as developing energy security and policy analysis in gas. This is a key role in the IEA Gas, Coal and Power Markets Division, given the importance of natural gas and the complex evolution of global gas markets, and its interactions with coal and electricity markets.

The selected candidate will be part of a team of enthusiastic professionals reporting to the Head of the Gas, Coal & Power Markets Division and working closely with staff  across the Agency on gas issues.

Main Responsibilities

Analysis and Drafting

·     Act as project manager and lead author of the IEA Medium Term Gas Market report, a comprehensive quarterly handbook of gas market evolution, demand and investment trends and projections.

·       Collaborate with the IEA Energy Data Centre to update and maintain databases, continuously develop analytical and forecasting methodology.

·       Summarise the gas market analysis work in presentations and memos for various IEA Committees, the Executive Office and media relations.

·       Monitor gas industry developments and develop analysis of emerging new issues and technologies.

Liaison and Outreach

·       Develop close co-operation with other IEA units, particularly with Oil Industry and Markets Division,  and Energy Policy and Security Division to ensure that all relevant IEA analytical fields receive appropriate support from a gas market analysis point of view.

·       Represent the IEA in conferences, industry associations and various policy forums where gas market developments are discussed.

·       Participate in preparations for meetings of IEA standing committees, working parties and conferences as required; participate in relevant meetings of other international organisations; provide support for the development of reports, analyses and information items for these meetings.

·       Maintain contacts with policy-level government, other international organisations, industry and research institutions. Promote the work of the Agency externally to a wide range of audiences through organising and participating in workshops, making presentations and holding bi-lateral meetings.

·       Support the Agency’s work on outreach by contributing to the analysis of the gas industry and markets in Associate member and non-member countries.

Management

·       Guide and coach the work of junior gas energy analysts and corporate secondees that contribute to IEA gas market analysis. Cordinate the work of all the gas analysts in the Division to ensure proper teamwork and cooperation.

·       Participate in the recruitment of staff and corporate secondees,along with the identification of external experts to participate in IEA work.

·       Cooperate horizontally with other IEA units, contribute to research and analytical projects that require professional input from a gas market perspective.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Academic Background

·     An advanced degree in economics, finance, business administration or engineering or other relevant discipline.

Professional Background

·     At least eight years’ professional experience focusing on gas market and industry analyses,  acquired in an energy company, financial institution, consulting firm or a policymaking/regulatory body.

·     Strong analytical capabilities, quantitative skills and spreadsheet modelling skills. Econometrics skills and experience in time series analysis would be an advantage.

·     A sound understanding of gas market fundamentals, demand and investment drivers.

Languages

An excellent written and oral command of English. Good knowledge of other language(s) would be an asset.

Contract Duration

·       Two-year fixed term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Selection Process

For retained candidates, written tests/video-recorded interviews are foreseen mid August and panel interviews are planned for mid September.
