The EIB, the European Union’s bank, is seeking to recruit for its Operations Directorate (OPS), Equity, Growth Capital & Project Finance (EGPF) Department, Equity & Growth Capital – Climate & Infrastructure Division (1-EGCI), New & Special Finance Solutions Unit (NSFS), at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a (Senior) Investment Officer – Cleantech *.

This is a full-time position at grade 5/6 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract

Purpose

As the EU’s climate bank, the EIB is committed to putting EU climate goals into practice both inside Europe and around the world.

As a (Senior) Investment Officer, you will play an active role in shaping the European Cleantech landscape, being responsible for the origination and execution of equity-type risk transactions as well as the development of new equity and quasi-equity products in the European Cleantech Growth Capital space. We achieve impact by deploying EIB’s own resources combined with EU-EIB financial instruments like the InvestEU Green Transition facility in the form of direct equity-type risk investments, and by crowding in other public and private investors.

Operating Network

The Division is structured in two operational Units, both functionally similar. The selected candidate would report to one of the Heads of Unit, and will work closely not only with colleagues within the Cleantech Equity & Growth Capital Division and across the front office Lending Directorate, but will also cooperate with the Group Risk & Compliance (GR&C), Legal (JU), Projects (PJ), Portfolio Performance Monitoring (PMM) and Finance/Funding (Fl) directorates of the Bank.

Accountabilities

Origination & Business Development

  • Originate quasi -equity transactions with Cleantech companies within EU 27
  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing and future clients
  • Cooperate with key stakeholders in the Cleantech space, including venture and private equity funds, financial advisors and sector/industry associations
  • Work with partner institutions such as the European Commission and other IFIs
  • Monitor closely his/her respective sectors and geographical coverage
  • Develop new products based on identified market gaps
  • Launch and monitor ex-ante market studies
  • Represent EIB at conferences
  • Prepare market awareness raising events and press events, as applicable

Investment Process

  • Lead the appraisal process in close collaboration with ElB’s internal services
  • Undertake financial and risk analysis, draft financial reports and approval documents, in cooperation with the internal technical sector experts
  • Develop deal structures and negotiate term sheets
  • Lead the contract negotiation process with the clients, legal advisors and internal services
  • Follow -up the development of the transactions, and in the event of contractual modifications, support structural modifications and contract negotiations in liaison with key external and internal stakeholders in order to maintain the quality of the loan portfolio
  • Provide periodic valuations on existing operations, coordinate closely with the Portfolio Management and Monitoring Department within EIB
  • As a senior member of the team, we also expect you to coach junior team members and proactively contribute to the team’s training and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor), and ideally at Masters level, in Finance/Business, Engineering or any related subject
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in the financial sector, preferably in Venture Debt, Venture Capital, Private Equity or other equity-like investments, ideally including a robust deal origination and execution track record. Experience in Corporate Banking/Finance, and/or High Yield/Sub -Investment Grade Debt and/or Mezzanine Financing will also be considered. Prior experience in Cleantech would be an asset.
  • Strong technical expertise in financial analysis/modelling/valuation and/or experience in credit risk analysis
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office (incl. Visual Basic) and financial databases
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (*), with a good command of the other. (Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage).

As both English and French are however official working languages of the EIB, proficiency in both languages is a pre-requisite for your future career development. Any language clause in your contract must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible for a promotion (either via the annual appraisal cycle or via an internal selection process). Proficiency is understood to mean the attainment of level 5 of the Inter Institutional language courses, corresponding to B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The Bank offers appropriate training support.
