As a key player in the fight against climate change, China is at the forefront of green technologies, particularly renewables and Electric Vehicles. This role focuses on leading the “China in the world” strategy, driving collaboration and partnerships with global stakeholders. You will be instrumental in accelerating climate actions, facilitating finance and investments, and promoting climate diplomacy on an international scale.
Responsibilities:
Strategy and Portfolio Development:
- Lead the “China in the world” strategy and portfolio development.
- Drive delivery through collaboration with CIFF teams and partners.
- Engage in multilateral mechanisms such as COPs, G20, BRICS, and regional collaborations.
Internal Collaboration:
- Utilize expertise in transition planning, technology, finance, and more.
- Work closely with CIFF global climate teams and regional climate teams.
- Collaborate on mapping out strategies and programs within CIFF global and regional portfolios.
Thought Leadership:
- Serve as an expert on “China in the world” providing insights to CIFF leadership.
- Advise CIFF teams and partners on the global climate agenda.
Partnership and Delivery:
- Collaborate with global partners to maximize the impact of the strategy.
- Support existing partners, build new partnerships, and strengthen the grantee ecosystem.
Philanthropic Leadership:
- Collaborate with peer funders to align strategies and coordinate grant-making.
- Identify and mobilize new resources for enhanced philanthropic impact.
Risk Management:
- Provide advice on risk management, working closely with relevant CIFF teams.
- Ensure organizational resilience through coordination with External Affairs, CIFF Voice, and Legal teams.

- Reports to the Global Director, Climate, overseeing CIFF global portfolios.
Role’s responsibilities:
Strategy & Planning:
- Lead the development of the “China in the world” strategy and sub-strategies for various regions.
- Conduct horizon scanning for funding needs and field capacity development.
- Prepare high-quality analysis for the Board/Investment Committee to determine strategic priorities.
- Proactively contribute to the Climate Leadership Team meetings and organization-wide strategy development.
Programme Development, Delivery & Performance:
- Manage a portfolio of programs and contribute to global strategies.
- Build strong relationships with regional Climate Directors and Managers.
- Monitor and report on portfolio performance against indicators and targets.
- Lead due diligence and risk management for proposals and programs.
- Prepare reports and grant agreements, ensuring high standards and timely delivery.
- Lead engagement with the Evidence, Measurement, and Evaluation team for monitoring and evaluation.
Sector Knowledge & Profile-Building:
- Become the expert on “China in the world,” including geopolitics and climate diplomacy.
- Share knowledge across the CIFF climate matrix structure.
- Contribute to thought leadership, marketing, and advocacy materials.
Stakeholder & Partner Management:
- Represent CIFF on advisory and supervisory boards.
- Support CEO and Executive Director, Climate, in engaging with senior officials and leaders.
- Evaluate potential grantees and apply account management disciplines with partners.
- Lead strategies to strengthen partnerships and increase resilience across the field.
Membership & Leadership:
- Be a role model, demonstrating CIFF’s leadership behaviours.
- Provide mentorship to less experienced team members and foster a culture of openness and continuous improvement.
Requirements
Skills and Experience
- Experienced leader in significant international projects and programs, particularly in China and global climate policy, geopolitics, and diplomacy.
- Extensive expertise in China-related climate diplomacy, with a focus on energy transition, sustainable finance, transport electrification, industrial decarbonization, and more.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Mandarin.
- Corporate communications and public affairs experience in large, complex organizations.
- Proven ability in analysis, due diligence, policy planning, and program delivery within the climate or public policy sectors.
- Deep knowledge of evidence-based decision-making for program design and implementation.
- Innovative, entrepreneurial thinker with a pragmatic and solution-oriented mindset.
- Ability to analyse organizational strengths and guide management teams for effective program implementation.
- Effective champion and promoter of causes with a humble and professional approach.
- Skilled in relationship building, collaboration, and working across cultural and socio-economic contexts.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Benefits
The starting salary for this role is GBP 80,000
CIFF operates a hybrid work policy across all locations, which means employees works some of the time from home. We are happy to provide more information on this as part of the recruitment process.
Alongside a competitive salary, we offer a generous benefits package here at CIFF that includes, but is not limited to the following. All these will be prorated to the fixed term.
- Annual leave – 25 days per annum. Increasing by 1 day after each year of service, to a maximum of 30 days.
