Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Global Compact is the United Nations’ voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. It revolves around ten universal principles drawn from four key international instruments in these areas. The Global Compact Office is the United Nations entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stakeholders by promoting partnerships and collective action in support of United Nations, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the overall direction of the Chief of Government Relations and Africa (GRA), working closely with government relations, UN Global Compact (UNGC) fundraising and Global Africa Business Initiative staff, the Senior Resource Mobilization Consultant will provide substantive support to the Government Relations and Africa team in activities related resource mobilization efforts for the Global Compact Africa Strategy and one of its flagship programmatic initiatives “Global Africa Business Initiative.” 1. Engagement with Private Sector Partners on Global Africa Business Initiative (GABI) Resource Mobilization Engage with private sector partners to mobilize resources for the GABI, particularly with ongoing conversations with but not limited to Bank of Industry (BOI), Ecobank, Flour Mills of Nigeria, National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), Rose of Sharon and BUA. Participate in fundraising calls and other calls directed by the Chief GRA and ASG UNGC, as appropriate. 2. Support on follow up of outstanding Africa Strategy Pledges Support UNGC Headquarters and Africa hub engage with private sector partners in securing pledged amounts to the Global Compact Africa Strategy, notably in facilitating its remittance to the Foundation for the Global Compact’s US-based bank account 3. Provision of Strategic Advice to Chief GRA Provide strategic advice to the Chief GRA and ASG UNGC on GABI donor prospects. Review the GABI fundraising matrix and generate prospect lists. Initiate outreach to these prospects and prepare fundraising alignment documentation as needed. Communicate weekly/and as needed on progress on fundraising to be incorporated as part of GABI fundraising progress reports. Participate in related GABI fundraising call and discussions. 4. Stakeholder Relationship Management Support and in alignment with the Chief GRA, engage with members of the Host Country Community of African Descent and diaspora, with a view of securing financial or in-kind support or participation to GABI, notably its Unstoppable Africa Convening. 5. Perform any additional duties as directed by the Chief GRA, in the exigency of service.
Qualifications/special skills
Master’s degree in law, business, corporate sustainability, or similar field. At least fifteen (15) years of relevant experience working with governments in areas related to outreach and liaison and/or any resource mobilization activities in a multicultural organization or national organization providing support on a global scope is required. Experience in intergovernmental negotiations in the UN System is desirable. Working experience with/in the United Nations system, or equivalent international organizations, is desirable. Experience in advocacy, maintaining and promoting constructive dialogues around the United Nations Global Compact’s vision to external actors is desirable. Experience with partnership building, formulating new approaches or identifying new opportunities to build relationships with both traditional and non-traditional partners, focusing on impact and results, is desirable. Experience with resource mobilization, especially in government resource mobilization strategies and/or experience in fundraising is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic, French, or Spanish is desirable.
