The Team

The Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM) is an embedded research institute with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We develop, use, and share computational modeling tools, and promote quantitative decision-making to support global efforts to eradicate infectious diseases and achieve permanent improvements in the health of those most in need. The IDM team comprises both research scientists and software engineers who work with a wide ecosystem of partners including universities, NGOs, government ministries and other research organizations.

Your Role

As a Senior Technical Product Manager, you will play a key role in connecting research and software strategy to technical solutions. Your scope will span across research areas and a range of models, tools, and platforms used to enable quantitative decision making. You will bring together the research, engineering, and leadership teams to collaboratively define and prioritize our technical roadmap. You will take ideas and translate them into detailed specifications, solution alternatives, or execution plans depending on the stage and needs of product development. You will navigate across teams and partners and ensure prioritization of and delivery on shared goals. We need someone who is able and excited to learn new areas quickly, is comfortable with ambiguity and able to develop right-sized process that tracks and communicates progress of programs and initiatives. What You’ll Do

  • Strategy and roadmap development.
  • Collaborate with research, engineering and partners to distill product goals and technical requirements into product strategy and vision.
  • Develop roadmaps, define feature releases and decision points, and identify risks, flexibly adapting as projects evolve.
  • Product definition and execution.
  • Understand researcher needs and goals and translate into technical requirements or specifications as needed for implementation.
  • Capture and analyze possible solutions, articulate tradeoffs, and communicate these to develop consensus on the approach that optimizes against priorities, timeline and resources.
  • Track progress across a range of products, ensuring visibility and oversight to adapt project scope and resources as needed.
  • Distill and communicate technical concepts to a variety of collaborators, with the right depth and clarity to drive key decisions and ensure alignment across teams.
  • Develop sufficient technical expertise to collaborate with engineers & researchers in order to move projects forward.
  • Build and maintain cross-functional teams to ensure product success, guiding and motivating teams to deliver results.
  • Identify key decision-makers and influencers and understand the different perspectives and requirements each brings into the product definition.

Your Experience

  • Master’s, Bachelor’s, or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other science-based field; equivalent applicable industry experience may also be considered.
  • 7+ years of technical product management experience in development and delivery of software products, including 2+ years of research or product incubation experience.
  • Experience in management consulting, particularly around product strategy is a plus.
  • Strong technical background with track record of ramping up in new areas quickly and effectively.
  • Consistent ability to bring clarity in ambiguous circumstances, making thoughtful trade-offs (time vs. effort vs. features), as well as knowing when more data is needed to make the right decision.
  • Record of developing and maintaining successful collaborations across teams and partners.
  • Experience leading science and engineering discussions and driving the team and leadership toward decisions that achieve business goals.
  • Experience overseeing concurrent projects, taking ownership and delivering results.
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to tailor communication as needed to different audiences.

The salary range for this role is $182,600 to $283,100 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences in Seattle and Washington D.C., where our offices are located. The range for this role in these locations is $199,000 to $308,400 USD. As a mission-driven organization, we strive to balance competitive pay with our mission. New hires salaries are typically between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint. Actual placement in the range will depend on a candidate’s job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process
