Background:

The Communications and Advocacy section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist the services of a Social Media Consultant to support the development of content for UN Women’s global social media channels and support field offices with overall social media account management.

The consultant will be reporting to the Social Media Specialist and work in close consultation with the overall global communication and advocacy team at UN Women.

Description of Responsibilities /Scope of Work

Under the supervision of the Social Media Specialist, the Social Media Consultant will be responsible for:

Supporting daily social media outreach and engagement around UN Women’s work and the issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment, specifically carrying out the below tasks:

  • In collaboration with colleagues, ideate and guide the production of high-impact social media content and packages in multiple languages, formats and/or platforms (including e.g.  event coverage, stickers, polls, GIFs, video, etc.), that effectively inform and engage external audiences and support campaigns.
  • Implement social media strategies in collaboration with colleagues in the Social Media Team and wider Communications and Advocacy Section.
  • Liaise with colleagues across the communications section and the wider organization to coordinate content planning and output.
  • Monitor, moderate and respond to incoming comments and queries on UN Women’s global social media accounts
  • Provide technical and administrative support to colleagues across regions on social media including access to tools and accounts.
  • Support the maintenance of files and records related to social media management.
  • Provide regular social media analytics, evaluation and data-driven suggestions on how to increase following and engagement.
  • Stay abreast of social media platform trends and in close coordination with the UN Women Social Media lead provide advice and suggestions on optimal platform use.
  • Create and edit simple graphic assets on Canva where needed.
  • Conduct other duties as requested during the period of the consultancy.

This is an office-based consultancy. The consultant is required to work at the UN Women duty station in New York.

Functional Competencies:

  • Very good understanding of major digital platforms and proven experience in strategic social media outreach at the international level;
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective social media strategies and campaigns;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Strong editorial judgement, including ethical and political awareness;
  • Very good organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities.

Education and Certification:

• BA Degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, Marketing, Social Media or similar.

• At least 3 years of experience in communications including writing and creating social media content.

Experience:

  • Experience in coordinating, implementing and evaluating social media campaigns;
  • Proven track-record of writing and editing engaging content for social media accounts.
  • Demonstrated experience using tools for online publishing, including social media publishing tools, such as Hootsuite.
  • Experience in measuring and analyzing social media reach and engagement monitoring and analysis, including reporting on quantitative and qualitative analytics.
  • Knowledge of women’s rights and gender equality issues considered a strong asset
  • Experience with creating and editing basic graphic assets on Canva is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with the UN system is considered an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French or Spanish is an asset.
