Your team

Within the The European Green Sky Directorate, the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub (EIH) carries out research, innovation and simulation activities to help improve European aviation performance, safety and sustainability, bridging the gap between R&D and operations. The EIH also addresses emerging new technologies as well as deployment of drones and urban air mobility systems.

You will join the Engineering Centre of Expertise (CoE) and play a pivotal role in designing, developing and implementing software solutions as part of EUROCONTROL’s innovation hub projects.

Your role

Your role will be to:

  • Design, develop, deploy software and its architecture, and produce relevant documentation.
  • Arbitrate technical solutions/options and document pros and cons.
  • Coach, supervise, train and develop other software engineers.
  • Manage Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, deploy and monitor Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS) environments.
  • Produce technical documentation, software development guidelines and best practices.
  • Manage technical interactions with third party component, service providers and stakeholders; take a lead role in driving and contributing to technical discussions.
  • Support project team(s) and users in demonstration/experimentation execution and capturing users’ needs.
  • Monitor technological evolutions and trends, and identify opportunities to drive efficiencies and innovation.
  • Carry out any other task in line with the main purpose of the job.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies

  • Completed university studies of at least 4 years (e.g. Master’s degree) in a relevant domain (e.g. software engineering, etc.).
  • Internal candidates can check on the intranet to see what level of in-house experience is considered equivalent to educational qualifications where appropriate.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant professional experience to carry out the described tasks.
  • Experience in server-side technologies; Java, Spring Boot, web services (WSDL, XML, REST).
  • Experience in software development architecture.
  • The following would be an asset:
    • Experience in browser technologies; HTML5/CSS, JS, REACT.
    • Experience in container and cloud technologies: Docker, Kubernetes, Azure Cloud
    • Experience in applying an Agile framework and related tools/ ceremonies.
    • Knowledge of ATM systems and, in particular, the NM B2B service.
  • Ability or experience in leading tasks, activities and/or (small) teams of software engineers. Experience would be considered an asset.
  • Technical drafting skills (English).

  • The working languages of the Agency are English and French. For this particular job, candidates must be proficient users of English at level C1/C2. The selected candidate will be required to become at least a basic user of French at level A1/A2 before the end of the probation period.
    The levels relate to the European-framework-reference Common European Framework of References for languages (CEFR).

Useful information

  • The selected candidate will be offered a contract of 5 Year (s) pursuant to the provisions of the Staff Regulations governing officials at EUROCONTROL. The contract may be renewed up to a maximum of 9 years or converted into an undetermined contract. Before being established in the post, the selected candidate will be requested to provide certified copies of their degrees and successfully serve a probationary period of 9 months.
  • Internal candidates
    If selected, the person will keep their current type of appointment duration (undetermined or determined).
    The internal staff member with a determined contract will be offered, in principle, an appointment for 5 Year(s) with a maximum total duration of 9 years.
  • The successful candidate shall be appointed at the grade set out in this vacancy notice, or if a group of grades has been published for a job level, in principle at the basic grade of the published job level.
  • Candidates declared suitable who are not selected for the post will be placed on a reserve list for similar roles. The reserve list will be valid for one year from the closing date of applications.
