Your team

Within the Directorate Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre, the ATM Cooperations and Technology (ACT) domain is responsible for designing, developing, integrating and providing cutting-edge ATM data services and systems to the ATM Domain – and our OPS Room in particular – and our external partners in an equitable manner.

Your role

The Software Engineer in Simulator, Replay & Support Services (SRS) team assumes product ownership (i.e. design, maintenance, development, and documenting software) for tools and products of the SRS portfolio.

S/He also supports other product owners with the maintenance and development of their products.

The job contributes to ensuring continuous provision of our Air Traffic Management (ATM) system and simulator components.

We’re seeking a skilled Software Engineer to join our Simulator, Replay & Support Services (SRS) team, taking the helm as the product owner of OMC (ODS Monitoring and Control) and serving as the backup product owner of SRAT (Super Role Allocation Tool).

In this role, you’ll be driving the maintenance and enhancements of OMC, a vital web-based tool that monitors and controls the Operator input and Display System (ODS). Your expertise will ensure seamless functionality of the Controller Working Positions (CWP) and the Record and Playback System (RPS), pivotal components of air traffic control operations.

Additionally, you’ll play a crucial role in the evolution of SRAT, another web-based tool instrumental in instructing subsystems across various Air Traffic Systems (ATS) and Voice systems to configure themselves effectively. Your contributions will enable smooth operations and optimal sectorization, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of our systems.

Your role will be to:

  • Design, develop, maintain and document software assuming product ownership, including:
    • analyse technical and operational problem reports, determine the diagnostics and solve problems;
    • analyse change requests resulting in lifecycle document changes, safety assessment, test scoping and effort estimation;
    • plan and implement changes and bug fixes including demonstration, documentation and unit testing in accordance with the SCRUM methodology;
    • analyse system performance to identify potential shortcomings and to propose solutions.
  • Support the users of the relevant product(s) by delivering training, presentations and providing documentation and advice.
  • Act as back-up product owner of other components including supporting users, analysing problem reports, fixing problems, etc.
  • Support other product owners based on the similar software stack with code reviews and small changes.
  • Foster the use of DevOps pipelines and software engineering tools by using Jenkins, Nexus, SonarQube.
  • Participate to projects, work packages, studies whenever required.
  • Establish, maintain and adhere to processes that protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the IT systems within the scope and to the standards defined in applicable security policies.
  • Carry out any other task in line with the main purpose of the job.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies

  • Post-secondary education attested by a diploma in a relevant area (Computer Science, Engineering, etc.). A relevant Bachelor’s degree would be an asset.
  • Internal candidates can check on the intranet to see what level of in-house experience is considered equivalent to educational qualifications where appropriate.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience as a full-stack developer of which at least 3 years’ experience with Java in the back-end and Angular/TypeScript in the front-end.
  • Experience in developing and designing software using Java and Spring Boot in the back-end, and JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS, HTML5 and the Angular framework in the front-end.
  • The following would be an advantage:
    • Experience with Jira and Git/Bitbucket.
    • Experience with the SCRUM methodology.
    • Experience with modern service-oriented architectures & middleware; message brokers, containers, API integration, data distribution, etc.
    • Knowledge of Linux.
    • Knowledge of Ada, C or C++.
    • Knowledge of DevOps pipelines.
    • Knowledge of MySQL and Hibernate.
    • Understanding of aircraft behaviour and Air Traffic Control Systems.
  • Technical writing skills (English).

Useful information

  • Applications will be accepted from nationals of EUROCONTROL Member States only.
  • The selected candidate will be offered a contract of 5 Year (s) pursuant to the provisions of the Staff Regulations governing officials at EUROCONTROL. The contract may be renewed up to a maximum of 9 years or converted into an undetermined contract. Before being established in the post, the selected candidate will be requested to provide certified copies of their degrees and successfully serve a probationary period of 9 months.
  • For new recruited Contract staff, the employment can be terminated earlier by both parties at the end of the period of notice that will be specified in the contract. The period of notice shall not be less than one month per year of service, subject to a minimum of one month and a maximum of three months.
  • Internal candidates
    If selected, the person will keep their current type of appointment duration (undetermined or determined).
    The internal staff member with a determined contract will be offered, in principle, an appointment for 5 Year(s) with a maximum total duration of 9 years.
  • The successful candidate shall be appointed at the grade set out in this vacancy notice, or if a group of grades has been published for a job level, in principle at the basic grade of the published job level.
  • Candidates declared suitable who are not selected for the post will be placed on a reserve list for similar roles. The reserve list will be valid for one year from the closing date of applications.
