The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is part of the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO). CMRE is an established, world-class scientific research and experimentation facility that organizes and conducts scientific research and technology development, centred on the maritime domain, delivering innovative and field tested Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to address defence and security needs of the Alliance. We are located in La Spezia, Italy, just 80 Km north of Pisa, on the Ligurian Coast – providing the ideal location for year-round maritime research and experimentation.
The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is looking for a Software Engineer to join our Software Development and Data Management Section within the Engineering and Information Technology Division. We are looking for key players with the aim to contribute to the surface and underwater capabilities within CMRE and the NATO Nations.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Leads software innovation projects
- Leads Agile project teams, work in an agile and inter-disciplinary working environment
- Coaches junior team members
- Is leading and involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle
- Champions software application security best practices
- Introduces standards, defines Software Development Lifecycles and monitors compliance
- Documents data models and software services
- Participates to and drives the definition of NATO standards
- Supports and coordinates with scientists, architects and operational staff
- Supports CMRE sea experiment planning with a focus on software development
- Works closely with the CMRE IT infrastructure team to ensure the software developed is deployable and in compliance with security requirements

The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties even in other parts of the organization as directed.
All other related duties should correspond with the required competencies for the job.
- Deployment/Travel
The incumbent may be required to perform his/her duties onboard Centre or chartered vessels. The incumbent may be required to undertake TDY assignments within and outside NATO boundaries.
- ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Professional/Experience
- Experience in technical leadership of project teams, including working with Business stakeholders to explain possibilities and limits of embedded and distributed software systems
- Professional experience in design and implementation of robotic and IoT software systems
- Professional experience in code analysis, change management, vulnerability management, and compliance monitoring
- Proven experience of involvement in the definition of industry de-facto standards and/or international standards
- Knowledge of software architecture design patterns such as micro-services and messaging patterns for distributed systems such as publish-subscribe
- Experience in sourcing and managing consultants
- Proficiency in at least two programming languages including Python, C, C , Java, and Rust
- Professional experience with embedded software development
- Professional experience in writing and working with API specifications

- Education/Training
A minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree at a nationally recognised/certified University in software engineering, computer science or a related discipline and 5 years post-related experience.
- Language Requirements
A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages (English and French), both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is desirable.

- DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in software engineering, computer science or related discipline
- Experience with scientific sea-going activities and data collection at sea using bespoke embedded systems
- Professional experience with DevSecOps, Cloud-native technologies
- Experience in software security and in developing/deploying software products in highly secured environments
- Professional experience with architectural framework and notations such as TOGAF, NAF, C4, UML, etc.
- Professional experience in object-oriented or functional programming paradigms, and in test-driven development
- Proven experience in leading teams using modern methodologies such as agile
- Certification in Agile methodology, e.g. Professional Scrum Master or similar
- Experience with Microsoft Azure or other public cloud providers
