Under these terms of reference, the consultant shall deliver the following outputs: • Two speeches written for the Chief of Section for the Vienna Conference against Trafficking in Persons and the 12th UNODC Conference of the Parties. • One article developed about the 12th UNODC Conference of the Parties. • Two speeches written for the Chief of Section for the ICAT Principals Meeting and the Council of Europe CDPC Plenary. • One article developed about the UNODC Global Forum of Prosecutors. • Editorial support provided for the HTMSS 2024 Annual Report.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is devoted to ensuring States have the tools, expertise and commitment to effectively prevent and respond to trafficking in persons (TIP) and smuggling of migrants (SOM). The UNODC Action against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling, implemented by UNODC’s Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section, aims to address these crimes. The UNODC Action against Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling is the main vehicle for the substantive servicing by the Section of UN bodies and organs, various UN and other international processes as well as the delivery of technical cooperation to partner countries. TIP and SOM are high on the agendas of governments and donors worldwide. These crimes are major topics of interest within the United Nations family, as well as media outlets and the general public. UNODC has longstanding experience in advocacy work towards promoting anti-human trafficking and migrant smuggling initiatives. In recent years, it has carried out several awareness-raising campaigns. The UNODC Action aims to become the world’s leading voice and source of information on these crimes, and this requires communication products. The purpose of the assignment is to support the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section with writing and editing communication and visibility products for the UNODC Action Programme. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Public Information Officer, and designated UNODC’s Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section senior staff, upon completion of the contract the consultant will have completed the following tasks: Four written speeches, two articles and support on the editorial work of the HTMSS 2024 Annual Report.
Qualifications/special skills
Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the fields of communication, journalism, media or public relations is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience: • A minimum of ten years of professional experience in communications, journalism, speechwriting, copywriting, proofreading, publishing or other related area is required; • Experience in speechwriting and editing is required; • Experience in copywriting and proofreading is desirable; • Experience within the UN system or similar international organisations is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English (i.e., oral and written proficiency and excellent drafting skills) is required. Knowledge of other official UN languages is an advantage.
