Description

Standardisation Engineer in the Requirements and Standards Section, Technical Reliability and Quality Division, Product Assurance and Safety Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
The Section provides key secretariat functions, as well as engineering and administrative support, to the Agency to manage and operate the Executive Secretariat for the European Cooperation for Space Standardisation (ECSS) activities and the European Space Components Coordination (ESCC) component standardisation, certification and qualification programme.

You will be part of a team responsible for providing the Executive Secretariat functions and coordination for ESA and ECSS standardisation activities.

Duties

Reporting to the Head of Section (TEC-QES) and within the fields described above, your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • supporting the executive functions provided by ESA for the European Cooperation for Space Standardisation system and the work of all the ECSS governing bodies and working groups;
  • assisting in the application of ECSS standards in ESA projects and programmes, supporting and monitoring the tailoring approach where required;
  • supporting the preparation, planning, development and monitoring of the annual work plan for ECSS standards and handbooks, including updating the existing standards, capturing and integrating lessons learned from the ECSS and ESA standardisation working groups, and acting as technical officer for relevant activities;
  • liaising with external entities such as ECSS board members, national space agencies, Eurospace and SMEs;
  • sustaining the development, migration and maintenance of the team IT infrastructure and architecture, such as the website, SharePoint, databases and requirement management tools, to support the standardisation programme;
  • supporting the new ECSS digitalisation initiative, including procurement, development, implementation and maintenance.

You may also be required to perform additional duties relating to other activities within your field of competence.

Education

A master’s degree in engineering or science is required for this post.

Additional requirements

  • Familiarity with the ECSS and ESCC programmes or equivalent standardisation systems in space projects;
  • Experience in applying standards, including tailoring them to industrial interfaces such as the space, automotive and aeronautics industries;
  • Knowledge of space system and subsystem engineering, hardware and software, development and testing;
  • Knowledge of product assurance, quality and safety in space programmes;
  • Experience in the production and coordination of standards, preferably in an international environment such as ECSS, ESCC, CEN-CENELEC, CCSDS or ISO, in direct support or within relevant working groups;
  • Knowledge of space project management and large project procurement;
  • Experience in digitalisation and IT tool development, implementation, commissioning and support;
  • Excellent communication skills, both and verbal and written, with the ability to summarise minutes of meetings and reporting at Executive and Board level with the appropriate mix of programmatic, managerial, engineering and quality content.

Negotiation skills, with the ability to achieve consensus among various space actors with diverging interests, are desirable. Experience in a serial production and industrialisation environment is considered an asset.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
