Duties and Responsibilities
Background:
This position is located in the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, Cluster 4 – Statistics, Information Society and Technology. The incumbent will report to a senior Statistician leading a project on SDG indicators, gender and vulnerable groups of population. The Statistical Assistant will provide effective statistical assistance to an essential function of the unit in an efficient and timely manner.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assemble original statistical material; adjust reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system.
• Generate tables and graphs.
• Participate in the review and compilation of background materials.
• Assist in evaluating and examining data sets for accuracy, clarity, and validity from different sources.
• Compile statistical series for comparison against different sources.
• Update statistical series in established formats for upload into the data portal and maintenance of relevant computerized databases.
• Participate in drafting statistical reports and provides statistics and information for publication.
• Assist in liaising with national statistical offices and focal points in the United Nations system organizations to obtain necessary statistical and other relevant information.
• Prepare data sets upon request; respond to queries/requests and maintain/update web pages.
• Organize workshops and meetings and assist in drafting relevant background materials and reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
The incumbent is required to complete the above-mentioned tasks with a high level of accuracy and punctuality.
Qualifications/special skills
A Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, or related area is required.

A minimum of 7 years of professional work experience in data manipulation using statistical software is required.
Experience in data analysis, desk research and good drafting skills is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.
For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required.
Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
