Background

The Food Security Portal, facilitated by IFPRI, aims to provide improved food security for the world’s poor and increased resilience of global food systems against food and financial crisis. The project brings together international, regional, and country-level data, news, and research aimed at meeting countries’ immediate food security needs, as well as building long-term global food security. The Food Security Portal (FSP) is designed to pool information in structured ways to ensure data quality, timeliness, and relevance, as well as the opportunity or collaboration among policymakers, development professionals, and researchers.

IFPRI is seeking a qualified consultant to facilitate strategic information delivery, maximize communication opportunities, and support the Food Security Portal in raising its profile as an information hub for food security and food crisis risk globally and in Africa south of the Sahara. The consultant will develop communications-related products drawing on expertise in communications for economic research and international development. S/he will facilitate strategic and effective delivery of information related to FSP activities such as webinars, dialogues, e-learning courses, research outputs, blog articles, and newsletters in English and French.

 

Scope of work

  • Lead the development of the Food Security Portal’s communications activities aimed at expanding FSP’s digital reach and engagement.
  • Identify stories and messages that are engaging, motivating and high quality, and which communicate impact and showcase the work of the FSP.
  • Coordinate the production of key communications products (blog articles, newsletter, brochures, reports, and promotional materials).
  • Ensure that all communication materials synergize with the FSP’s communication strategies and branding.

 

Required qualifications of the consultant / survey team leader

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (such as English, Communications, International Development, Economics) plus 5 years of work experience in copyediting, web content development, and/or communications.
  • Excellent written communication and editing skills, particularly conveying technical information for diverse audiences.
  • Strong communication skills in English; able to communicate positively and effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Self-motivated and self-disciplined, with the ability to work independently, meet deadlines and manage completing priorities.
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

 

Preferred qualifications

  • Familiarity with food security issues, international development, and economics.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word.
