Duties and Responsibilities
The Stress Counsellor will work under the direct supervision of the Head of Joint Medical Services- ESCWA, in coordination with DHMOSH/DOS. As this is a post jointly funded by the participating organizations, it is planned for the Stress Counsellor to operate from the ESCWA offices as well as other selected offices.
Responsibilities:
1. Counseling and Training Activities for UN Staff from the participating UN Entities:
• Provides individual and group counseling sessions.
• Organizes and conducts training sessions on stress prevention and stress related issues.
• Promotes, plans and implements welfare activities.
2. Participate in implementing UN Mental Health Strategy:
• Develop and perform a wide range of activities for the participating UN Offices in the country;
• On going assessment of psycho-social Risk Assessment at the workplace, and monitors the determinants of stress in the participating UN Offices.
• Develop and perform tailored activities based on Risk Assessment.
3. Reporting and Advising on Stress Management Activities
• Advises the UN Management on stress mitigating strategies, decisions and activities
• Liaises with local experts and institutions in the country for referral, as well as with UN line managers, medical doctors, and local physicians in order to build a network of professionals ready to support and intervene in case of need.
Qualifications/special skills
A Master’s degree in clinical psychology or clinical psychiatry or related area is required with clinical license to provide psychological counseling and/ or psychotherapy is required.
Additional training or certification in a broad range of related fields, such as alcohol/substance abuse, stress management, traumatic stress, cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution, etc would be an asset.

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience is required, of which 3 should be at the international level.
Experience in Employee Assistance Programme or Organizational Intervention would be an asset. Prior experience in a UN peace operation is an advantage.
Languages
Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.
For this position, Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
