This post is located in the General Maintenance Shop, Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the Foreperson of the General Maintenance Shop. The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.
Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the General Foreperson of the Unit and direct supervision of the Foreperson of the General Maintenance Shop, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties: • Construct metal/wood framing metal and prepare for sheetrock (dry wall) partitions • Install, compound/spackle and prep sheetrock for paint • Erect scaffolding on various jobs; metal partitions and doors • Install floor tiles such as asphalt, vinyl or rubber, wall tiles and ceiling tiles • Assemble new furniture and repair old furniture such as desks, chairs, tables, shelving units and bookcases; detach, attach and hang pictures for offices, work areas, conference rooms, and supply rooms, etc., as part of the building maintenance throughout the UNHQ Complex and offsite leased premises • Build stages for UN events on occasions • Repair cracks on walls and ceilings, including pavements • Install ceramic tiles, marble and flagstone • Work with block, brick, and glass, and move heavy materials such as sand-stone-gravel • Take charge of masonry work • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Foreperson and General Foreperson

Education
High school or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
A certificate in OSHA 10 or 30 hour Construction Safety is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive working experience in the area of general building construction and maintenance services is required. Experience in the use of general building construction and maintenance related tools and equipment is required. Experience performing construction of metal and sheetrock (drywall) partitions, door installations and rough/finish carpentry is required. Experience performing light masonry, including flooring, wall and tile repairs is required. Experience performing installation and removal of commercial office partitions is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations Language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year. This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to Staff Rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
