Contract Information

Fixed-term for two years (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension, subject to satisfactory performance

Salary Information

US$ 50,377 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 36,171). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom

Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the French Translation Section, the incumbent will manage a team and will be responsible for the production of quality work from the French Word Processing Unit within the French Translation Section, Conference Division, in line with the standards of the Organization.This vacancy is open to all qualified candidates. Duties and Responsibilities

To manage all the activities of the French Word Processing Unit, making suitable arrangements for adequate deployment of staff, organizing shifts, and assigning individuals to specific tasks, as required. To organize and assign the processing of documents (typing, editing, and proofreading), continuously assessing and bearing in mind the volume and complexity of texts, and ensuring adequate sharing of the workload. To verify all translated documents to ensure that changes have been accurately incorporated. Notify translators/revisers of errors and discrepancies found, in accordance with IMO guidelines and with the assistance of the CAT tool (eLUNa) used in the Division. To ensure the timely production of all documents received, assuming responsibility for the quality of the work undertaken in the Word Processing Unit, including conformity with originals, avoidance of grammatical, typing and copying errors, and adherence to guidelines relating to style and layout of IMO documents and international instruments. To enter relevant data into the Documents Management System on submission/completion of documents, and ensure that documents are correctly proofread, filed, and transferred electronically to the Documents Section for printing and distribution. To conduct performance appraisals and coordinate staff development activities as may be required. To assess the need for the recruitment of temporary employees and make suitable proposals to the Head of the French Translation Section. To maintain close liaison with the Heads of the various Sections of the Conference Division and in particular the Head of the French Translation Section. To attend coordination meetings with staff of other Divisions, in preparation for forthcoming meetings (reporting on the work of the team and arrangements made to manage workload). To be prepared to work night shifts and/or overtime on a regular basis as required. To perform other duties as required

Experience

A minimum of 3 years of progressive professional experience in the preparation, coordination, and production of documents in French is essential. A minimum of 2 years in a role with line management/supervisory responsibilities is essential. Experience within an international organization/setting would be an asset

Education

University degree in language studies, editing and publishing or translation, or related fields are essential

Language Skills

Proficiency in French (written and oral), which should be mother tongue or principal language of education is essential. Complete proficiency in English both written and oral is essential. Working knowledge of other official languages of the United Nations system would be an asset

Others

Proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Word and Excel are essential. Competency in proofreading technical texts in French is essential
