Context
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) began operating in 1969 as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. In 1987, the agency changed its name but kept the original acronym. The goal of UNFPA is to ensure sexual and reproductive rights and choices for all, especially women and young people, so that they can access high-quality sexual and reproductive health services, including voluntary family planning, maternal health care and comprehensive sexuality education. UNFPA promotes gender equality and empowers women, girls and young people to take control of their bodies and their futures. The Fund works with partners in more than 150 countries to provide access to various sexual and reproductive health services. In 2018, UNFPA launched efforts to achieve three transformative results, known as the three zeros, by 2030.
