Your team

Within the Network Management Directorate, “Infrastructure” manages the European infrastructure deployment projects and programmes, and aims at making the SES digital sky a reality. It develops, organises and provides European common services including network support services, aeronautical information services and the radio frequency function.

The SUR Software Engineer & Algorithm Specialist is in charge of investigating issues and defining algorithmic and architectural changes related to the core part of surveillance performance monitoring tools known as SASS-C VERIFication. These tools are operated by Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP), Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) and the ATM industry, and are maintained and developed by EUROCONTROL.

Your role

Your role will be to:

  • Perform reverse engineering of software algorithmic sub-parts to explain why specific limitations are encountered by users.
  • Define, justify and develop algorithmic, functional and architectural improvements to resolve issues encountered by users.
  • Develop models and prototype to justify improvement proposals.
  • Implement the changes in the code and update the corresponding documentation.
  • Develop automated unit tests.
  • Carry out any other tasks in line with the main purpose of the job.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies

    • University degree of 4 years (e.g. Master’s degree) in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or Mathematics. A degree in ATM surveillance would be considered an asset.
      Having a PhD in Computer Science with a focus on ATM surveillance tracking/reconstruction algorithms, or being in the final stages of completing such a PhD, will be considered an asset.
    • Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience to carry out the advertised tasks.
    • Experience in defining, justifying and implementing mathematical algorithms related to trajectory reconstruction including data filtering, statistical and decision theory.
    • Experience in analysing issues encountered in mathematical formulas and algorithms.
    • Experience in reading/writing C++ code.
    • Experience in reading/writing Python code.
    • Experience in writing technical documentation related to algorithms and software development cycle in C++ code (e.g. writing software requirements, software design, process workflow and sequence).
    • Experience in trajectory data reconstruction including Kalman filtering.
    • Experience in data association, reconstruction and associated mathematical techniques and error models.
    • The following would be considered an advantage:
      • Understanding of ATM surveillance.
      • Knowledge of Air Traffic Management (ATM)

Useful information

  • The selected candidate will be offered a contract of 5 Year(s) and it may be renewed up to a maximum of 9 years or converted into an undetermined contract pursuant to the provisions of the Conditions of Employment of Contract Staff at EUROCONTROL. Before being established in the post, he/she will be requested to provide certified copies of his/her degrees and successfully serve a probationary period of 9 months.
  • The successful candidate shall be engaged in principle at the basic grade of the advertised grades.
