CALL FOR INTERNAL CANDIDATES

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

For this vacancy, the following are considered first level candidates:

  1. Internal candidates.
  2. Staff members on special leave of absence with or without pay (SLWOP).
  3. UN Volunteers with at least twelve (12) months of continuous service with IOM.
  4. Staff members separated due to funding constraints will be considered as first level candidates (internal equivalents) for vacant positions for which they apply in accordance with IN/233, for a period of 12 months after separation.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Mission (CoM) and in coordination with the Regional Media and Communications Officer and the Media, Innovation & Community Engagement Unit at Headquarters (HQ), the National Media and Communications Officer will be responsible and accountable for managing the implementation of media and communications-related activities in IOM Colombia Country Office (CO).

1. In close coordination with the CoM, define and implement IOM’s internal and external communication strategy under the IOM Colombia.

2. Develop and strengthen links with the press and media in the country. Lead the press and public information communications. Coordinate the press conferences, press releases, web-related documents, briefing notes, and talking points in support of public engagements of the CoM.

3. Contribute to the development and implementation of a digital engagement strategy, including generating timely and engaging content for social media and regularly updating web content.

4. Monitor local and international media and inform the CoM and Programme Managers on relevant developments.

5. Contribute technical inputs for the development of training materials and deliver specific training to team members, other units and field teams.

6. Liaise with media counterparts in governmental and non-governmental partner agencies. Participate in the global, regional and/or national UN Communications Groups and relevant interagency media and communication working groups to encourage information flow across agencies and to develop complementary media strategies.

7. Based on the information gathered from Programme Managers (PMs), regularly draft press releases and other public information products, both in written and audio-visual formats, for international and national audiences, as well as for the Organization’s press notes, global communication initiatives, in order to increase the visibility of IOM at the local and regional level.

8. Participate in inter-agency media and communication working groups to encourage information flow across agencies and to help develop complementary media strategies.

9. Coordinate the public information materials production related to the IOM Colombia’s press briefing notes, country website, social media, newsletters and other media channels in clear and concise English and Spanish.

10. Ensure fulfilling donor´s visibility and communication requirements in line with IOM institutional mandate.

11. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Education

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, International relations, Public Information or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two (2) years of relevant professional experience; or
  • University degree in the above fields with four (4) years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Experience as a writer, editor and content producer/manager in international Journalism and/or public information roles, preferably in the Region;
  • Experience in digital communications and social media;
  • Experience in corporate writing and editing;
  • Experience in managing donor visibility;
  • Experience with media liaison;
  • Experience in humanitarian communications;
  • Experience working in the region and/or in an emergency setting an advantage; and,
  • Experience in working in UN or other international organizations.

Skills

  • Skills in graphic design, particularly using Adobe programmes an advantage;
  • Skills in photography and videography, both shooting and editing an advantage;
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and gender sensitivity;
  • High level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines in a complex and fast changing environment; and,
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.

Notes
