You will be reporting to the Head of the Systems and Concurrent Engineering Section (TEC-SYE), Systems Engineering Division (TEC-SY), Systems Department (TEC-S), Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
As a first assignment, you will provide systems engineering support to an ESA space mission project, for example the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin mission (EXM-RFM), in the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration.
You will coordinate with industry in contributing to the following tasks:
• establishing and consolidating the end-to-end system architecture and operations concept in line with the mission requirements and needs;
• performing and evaluating system design trade-off studies where needed and ensuring that the requirements, design and performances are consistent with the system-level needs;
• defining, allocating, consolidating, maintaining and verifying the system (ground and space) and external and internal interface requirements and ensuring traceability and coherence with mission requirements and technical and programmatic constraints;
• establishing, consolidating, maintaining and analysing all system budgets, including performances, throughout the project life cycle, ensuring their compliance with mission requirements;
• defining, maintaining and coordinating the implementation of a coherent and consistent AIV/T flow to ensure proper verification at mission level;
• coordinating the verification of the ESA top-level technical requirements;
• supporting the assessment of deviations, waivers and non-conformances;
• preparing and supervising verification activities at mission and ground segment levels, including systems engineering resolution of non-conformances;
• providing regular reporting to the project line manager, identifying technological and performance risk areas and proposing and implementing agreed improvements and mitigation measures;
• coordinating the various project engineering domains in support of the systems engineering function;
• supporting the Product Assurance Manager to ensure that proper quality assurance practices are applied during the manufacturing, integration and testing phases;
• supporting the Mission and System Team Leader in the management of the industrial contractor activities relevant to mission analysis, mission preparation and Spacecraft Composite assembly and verification;
• when applicable, supporting the implementation of MBSE (model-based system engineering) in the project;
• monitoring the implementation of life cycle analysis and the Zero-Debris Policy in accordance with the initiatives of the ESA Clean Space Office;
• liaising regularly with the Systems and Concurrent Engineering Section for the gathering and transfer of knowledge and lessons learned across the Agency.

A master’s degree in engineering or physics is required for this post.
Additional competencies considered assets for this position are:
• mission design of complex planetary or exploration missions;
• cost and schedule aspects relating to complex planetary or exploration missions;
• experience of working with space agencies and international organisations on the handling of complex spacecraft systems interfaces;
• experience in the implementation of MBSE in a project environment;
• experience in requirements engineering using DOORS or equivalent tools;
• strong analytical skills and the ability to solve complex problems.

In accordance with the European Space Agency’s security procedures and as part of the selection process, successful candidates will be required to undergo basic screening before appointment conducted by an external background screening service.
In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
