The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration until December 31, 2024. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Kabul, with frequent travel to project locations in northern Afghanistan.
Welthungerhilfe (WHH) Afghanistan primarily focuses on the thematic areas of emergency relief, humanitarian assistance, rehabilitation and resilience, nutrition-sensitive agriculture and natural resource management, civil society, empowerment and skills development. Despite its’ present focus on humanitarian aid, WHH is verifying opportunities and negotiating funds for structural support to agricultural production, improvement of agricultural infrastructure/facilities with a focus on Natural Resource Management (NRM), reforestation and environment. As Technical Advisor you will support the Head of Programmes, Project Managers and Area Managers with technical support and contribute to the implementation of projects according to internal and external quality standards. In the areas of natural resource management and sustainable livelihoods, you will support project and area managers in procurement, implementation of technical measures and social components within the framework of the WHH Afghanistan programs.
Your responsibilities
- Support the programme/project team in the day-to-day management of project-related activities in the fields of Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security, Natural Resource Management, and Sustainable livelihoods
- Provide advice to the programme team and facilitate knowledge building
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to all project components and support the regional and project managers in the coordination of the implementation of planned activities
- Network with NGO’s, educational institutions, the private sector and other relevant groups to progress and identify appropriate Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security, Natural Resource Management and Sustainable livelihood approaches for Afghanistan
- Identify gaps for needs assessments
- Coordinate, plan and develop new projects in close coordination with WHH project teams, partner organisations and national project management staff
- Support the project team in the preparation of donor reports
- Advise and support project partners in the timely preparation of reports for donors and supervisors
- Coordinate closely with local and international partner NGOs in all project matters
- Maintain effective working relationships with key relevant government authorities both at national and regional level
- Represent WHH at donor meetings and NGO/UN coordination forums (UN relevant Clusters)
Your profile
- A Bachelor or Master’s degree in Environmental Science or accepted equivalent professional experience in NRM / sustainable livelihood
- At least 5 years of experience in development aid, ideally in the Afghanistan region
- Working experience abroad is essential, while experience working in insecure environments is a plus
- Advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Good team player, a good sense of humor and experience in mentoring staff
- Proven organizational and training skills
- Ability to work under time pressure and sometimes heavy workload
- Willingness to work in an insecure environment and commitment to adhere to strict security procedures
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and coordination skills
- Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for traveling to Welthungerhilfe’s programme countries
- Excellent spoken and written English language skills
