Duties and Responsibilities
Background Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyzes, and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework, catalyzes action, and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians, and the science and technology community. Duties and Responsibilities The consultant will report to the National Programme Management Officer in Brazil as part of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean (ROAC). – Provide technical support for the activities in the context of the Group of 20 (G20) disaster risk reduction work group and the Brazil presidency by preparing documents and assisting in organizing meetings, among other tasks. – Provide technical assistance to the national and local governments to develop disaster risk reduction action plans with a gender-inclusive lens. – Provide technical assistance related to the implementation of UNDRR´s tools as part of the Making Cities Resilient initiative (MCR2030). These include the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for cities and its addendums, particularly towards gender equality and inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWD). – Support capacity development events in the region, particularly aimed at strengthening disaster risk reduction and inclusion capacities at local and national levels. – Support communication efforts of the G20 and of the national portfolio to ensure effective outreach and dissemination of UDRR work, activities, events, products, tools, and methodologies along with the participating entities. – Provide technical support to identify, collect, and share knowledge, good practices, and lessons learned from the implementation activities to support disaster risk reduction.
Qualifications/special skills
A first-level university degree in social sciences, law, international affairs, urban development, or related areas is required. A minimum of two (2) years of professional program management experience is required. A minimum of one (1) year of professional experience related to urban and/or disaster risk reduction areas is required. Experience in international relations and affairs, climate change, sustainable development, or related areas is desirable. Experience working with International Organizations is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English and Portuguese is required for this consultancy. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
