Salary Information
US$ 77,326 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 59,000). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom
Purpose
Under the overall supervision of the Head, Cargoes and Technical Cooperation Coordination Section of the Sub-Division for Marine Technology and Cargoes (MTC), the incumbent will provide technical expertise on matters related to the maritime transport of cargoes and containers including dangerous goods and solid bulk cargoes; assist with the development of technical provisions on alternative fuels and related technologies and coordination of divisional technical cooperation matters
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head, Cargoes and Technical Cooperation Coordination Section, the incumbent will deliver on matters related to carriage of cargoes and containers, including liquefied gases in bulk and alternative fuels.1 Act as the Secretary of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC) including preparation and organization of Sub-Committee meetings; draft and edit related documents, briefs and reports and carry out follow-up actions.2 Assist on the maintenance of International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) and the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code), including the development of technical provisions in relation to alternative fuels and related technologies.3 Provide technical expertise and assistance to the work of the MSC and MEPC and their subsidiary bodies, including expert, working and drafting groups and prepare and review relevant meeting briefs, documents and reports. 4 Respond to technical queries related to the MTC Sub-Division, in particular, on matters related to maritime transport of cargoes, containers and the operational provisions for alternative fuels (CSC Convention, IMDG, IMSBC, IGF, IGC, Grain, CSS and CTU Codes) in line with the requirements of IMO instruments. Prepare reports, publications, presentations, circular letters and other documents.5 Carry out missions on specific assignments and represent the Organization at national and international conferences, seminars, workshops and similar events, preparing and presenting lectures and technical papers. 6 Provide expert advice on matters related to the maritime transport of cargoes, containers, and the operational provisions in relation to new alternative fuels, considering the latest research and trends. Prepare briefs, reports and articles for publication.7 Support the monitoring of technical co-operation matters affecting the Division and assist with the implementation of relevant projects for technical cooperation capacity-building activities. 8 Perform other duties, as may be required

Experience
Minimum seven years’ professional experience in at least one of the following fields: maritime administration officer, deck officer, port operations manager dealing with maritime transport of cargoes, in particular dangerous goods and solid bulk cargoes is essential. Expertise knowledge of the IMDG, IMSBC, IGF and IGC codes is essential
Education
Advanced university degree in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Maritime Policy or a related discipline dealing with the transport of cargoes by sea is essential
Language Skills
Proficiency in English (written and oral) is essential. Working knowledge and ability to understand complex technical issues in other official languages of the UN will be an asset
Others
Ship/Cargo survey experience based on IMO regulations and classification society rules is essential. Proficiency in MS Office applications is essential. Experience with implementation of technical cooperation activities would be an asset. Familiarity with the Secretariat roles and processes regarding CCC Sub-Committee, and its Editorial and Technical (E&T) Group l an asset
