The 1st NATO Signal Battalion (NSB) provides Communication and Information System (CIS) services to deployed NATO Headquarters (HQs).

The Maintenance and Support Company (M&S Coy) is responsible for the Level 1 and Level 2 maintenance and repair of NATO Communications and Information Systems (CIS) and non-CIS equipment.

The Communications and Information Systems Platoon is responsible for the operational planning and control of all level 2/2 Communications Information Systems (CIS) maintenance assets in support of NATO operations and exercises.

The Information Systems Administration Section is responsible for level 2 maintenance of local area communications and information systems and services, on all NATO locations (Deployed or Peace Time Location).

The incumbent is responsible for technical support of the assigned Communication Services (Networking, Voice and Video Teleconferencing (VTC).

The Technician (Communications) duties are:

 Ø  Provides 2nd line remote support for network related issues.

Ø  Provides 2nd line remote support for voice related issues.

Ø  Provides 1st line remote support for VTC related issues.

Ø  Mentors other Communications Teams to provide level 1 and level 2 support.

Ø  Assists the Section Head and Comms Engineer in ensuring that preparation, operation and maintenance of all network assets is kept at highest standards to allow rapid deployment.

Ø  Performs network administration tasks, troubleshooting and network implementation of all routing, switching, border protection devices, voice and VTC devices. Including network monitoring to ensure systems are technically ready and operational.

Ø  Interacts with the service desk and other teams to assist in troubleshooting, identify root cause, and provide technical support when needed.

Ø  Provides assistance for exercise planning and support.

Ø  Performs the investigation and resolution of problems related to network and voice services.

Ø  Performs on-the-job training for newly assigned personnel.

 

The incumbent will be required to undergo a specific NATO provided training path in order to be granted with the appropriate administrative rights enabling the fulfillment of the support level stated under the principal duties of this JD.

 

The Technician may be required to perform a similar range of duties elsewhere within the organisation at the same grade without there being any change to the contract. It may be required to undertake deployments in support of military operations and exercises, and/or TDY (duty travel) assignments, both within and without NATO boundaries. Such operational deployment may be up to a total 6 months (uninterrupted or in shorter periods) in any period of 18 months and may be on short notice. Acceptance of an employment contract linked to this post constitutes agreement to deploy.

 

The work is normally performed in a Normal NATO Office environment.

Normal Working Conditions apply.  The risk of injury is categorised as: No risk / risk might increase when deployed.

 

The successful candidate has the following qualifications/experience:

ü  English – good – NATO Standard Language Proficiency 3322

(Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in accordance with NATO standard agreement (STANAG) 6001.

NOTE: The work both oral and written in this post and in this Headquarters as a whole is conducted mainly in English

ü  Higher Secondary education and intermediate vocational training in related field with 2 years’ experience OR Secondary education and completed advanced vocational training in related field leading to a professional qualification or accreditation with 4 years related experience.

ü  Experience working with modern telecommunications systems including routing, switching, Voice over IP and VTC equipment.

ü  Experience deploying and maintaining CIS networks.

ü  Proven knowledge of international communications standards.

ü  Hands-on experience on sophisticated test equipment and tools for telecommunications systems.

Desirable qualifications/experience are:

ü  CIS experience in telecommunication systems including SATCOM, Firewalls, Fiber Optics, Tactical communications and Network monitoring tools.

ü  Experience in a NATO or military deployed CIS environment.

ü  Training in Routing and Switching, VoIP, VTC or other relevant CIS training.

 

Personal Attributes

The incumbent of this position is part of Maintenance and Support Company of the NATO Signal Battalion and will interact with the Battalion HQ staff and with technicians in the Deployable CIS Modules (DCMs); therefore, we are looking for someone who possesses good communications and collaboration skills. The incumbent must be self-reliant in resolving technical matters and be able to think clearly and calmly under pressure. The incumbent is required to possess the ability and experience to provide on the job training and mentoring to junior civilians and military personnel.  The incumbent must also possess the ability to assess technical situations and take appropriate action or recommend solutions.

The successful selected candidate needs to complete a NATO medical examination and have a NATO security clearance before an employment offer will be released.

The medical examination will take place with our medical consultant, is required to determine if the recommended candidate is fit to perform the duties and is deployable to NATO’s areas of operation.
