Overview: The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Division on NCD, Digital Health, and Capacity Building supports the strengthening of individuals, and institutions (including public, private, and philanthropic organizations) at global, regional, and country levels to ensure that these partners have essential capacities, structures, and systems in place to tackle non-communicable diseases, innovate through the uptake of digital health tools and approaches, and enhance their capacities through more accessible, affordable, and accredited training in a sustained and sustainable manner.

The WHO Academy operates as a specialized global entity within the World Health Organization, working collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders to support the advancement of health education worldwide. It acts as a key driver in shaping the learning strategies and initiatives to address the evolving needs of the global health community. Currently, WHO delivers over 1,400 courses for both internal and external learners through various diverse digital learning platforms. The WHO Academy aims to migrate these courses on its Learning Experience Platform (LXP). WHO, UNITAR, and The Defeat-NCD Partnership will work together to accelerate the efforts of establishing this unified platform, including migration of existing courses and development of new courses.

General objectives of the contract: Reporting to the UNITAR Project Manager, the Trainee (Graphic designer) is a key member of the “WHO Academy course mobilisation programme: Migration and co-production of courses (WHOA: MCC)” who is responsible for creating and updating the required multimedia assets for 150 migrated courses on the Academy’s LXP.

Responsibilities/description of professional services:

  • Collaborating with the UNITAR Project Manager and instructional designers to design and produce high-quality graphics for online courses.
  • Creating visually appealing course banners, icons, infographics, and other graphic elements as required, in alignment with the defined visual standards for hosted courses.
  • Assist in the migration of existing course materials to updated formats, ensuring visual consistency and quality.
  • Supporting the instructional design team in uploading relevant multimedia assets to different platforms (such as Vimeo) so they can be embedded within the relevant courses.
  • Following branding guidelines and ensuring all graphic materials align with the WHO Academy’s visual identity for hosted courses.
  • Providing creative inputs during brainstorming sessions and design reviews.
  • Maintaining organized files and documenting design processes for future reference.
  • Managing multiple design tasks and projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.

  3. Knowledge of design principles, typography, colour theory, and layout techniques.
  4. Understanding of digital content creation and multimedia production.
  5. Basic knowledge of animation techniques.
  6. Basic understanding of learning management systems and educational technologies.
  7. Ability to work in a multicultural, multidisciplinary environment.
  8. Proven ability to ensure the effective use of resources.
  9. Proven ability to work with a diverse team across different functional areas in different time zones.
Experience

Desired Experience

  • Previous experience in graphic design projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to create digital graphics and multimedia content, as evidenced by a strong portfolio.
  • Proficiency in using common design software (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, QuarkXPress, Illustrator)
  • Understanding of HTML or other web design applications; experience in web design or website development is an asset
  • Able to multitask, comfortable working with briefs and deadlines
  • Demonstrated diplomatic skills and excellent interpersonal skills with sensitivity to cultural and political differences
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills
  • Expertise in video, print design, photography and organisational branding is an asset
  • Experience working within branding guidelines, or developing these for organisations, is an asset
  • The assignment requires the trainee to be self-sufficient and arrange to be equipped with the requisite professional tools and equipment to carry out this assignment such as laptop and a mobile phone.
Education level

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent graphic design, visual arts, multimedia design, or a related field.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing graphic design skills, particularly in digital media and multimedia arts.
Language skill
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset, but not a requirement.
