What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the position

The ICRC is exploring and seeking partnerships to facilitate the delivery of its mission and live up to its mandate to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence, and to provide them with assistance. Such partnerships involve, amongst others, combining the resources and capacities of different actors – including Development Actors (DAs) – as per comparative advantages, to secure the highest possible impact on those in need.

The Development Center of Expertise (DEV COE) has been established to steward the engagement with DAs to support resource mobilization from these actors, as well as design and implement impactful partnerships in support of sustainable humanitarian impact.

The associate will support the ICRC’s efforts in improving understanding and furthering of engagement, including by contributing to resource mobilization with Development Actors.
More generally, the associate will support partnership managers of the DEV COE in backstopping key accounts.

General Duties

  • Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
  • Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct
  • Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
  • Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times
  • Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times
  • Develops and maintains a cheerful and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers
  • Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC
  • May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when vital.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Enhances, updates and maintains internal and external communication material for the DEV COE, strengthening its engagement with external actors
  • Researches and analyses external information and trends shaping the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, and on ODA and sustainable development
  • Supports the Partnerships Managers as per needs and requests, including for francophone accounts, in the implementation of key account Plans of Action
  • Assists the preparation of programme/project development and proposals
  • Provides backstopping and ad hoc support to key accounts
  • Supports the DEV CoE in initiatives that strengthen its role as the key knowledge hub for resource mobilization from DAs
  • Supports the drafting of operational guidance documents and strengthening standard operating procedures
  • Assist on other tasks not listed here.

Relationships

  • Internally: REM Development Center of Expertise, REM IDC, REM REP, other units depending on needs.
  • Externally: Development Actors and related stakeholders.

Certifications / Education required

  • Min. Bachelor’s (Masters preferred) degree in economics, International Relations, Social Sciences, or equivalent education
  • Good comprehension of sustainable development and humanitarian challenges
  • Excellent verbal communication and writing skills. Fluency in English and French
  • Engaging and solutions-oriented personality
  • Attention to details
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work within defined timelines
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills, flexible and efficient manner
  • Great teammate
  • Passion for humanitarian work and ability to operate in a sophisticated international organization.

Desired profiles and skills

  • Minimum 12 months of professional experience
  • Former exposure to Development Actors or experience in the development sector
  • First experience in relationship management or fundraising experience or a strong interest to develop fundraising skills
  • Project management skills would be an asset
  • Experience in drafting technical reports and data analysis.
