Women’s Leadership for Peace
The Peacekeeping Training Programme Unit (PTPU) is part of UNITAR’s Division for Peace. The Unit contributes to the international community’s efforts towards the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the building of lasting peace. Recognising that peace is a prerequisite for the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, PTPU supports the development of capacities in the areas of peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and crisis management. Through innovative and results-oriented approaches, the Programme Unit strengthens knowledge and skills of individuals, groups, and institutions.
In alignment with the Agenda 2030 as well as UNITAR’s strategic vision, the Youth and Women’s Empowerment pillar within UNITAR’s Division for Peace contributes to a world in which young people and women are able to participate in and contribute to, on an equal base and at all levels, to the sustaining peace agenda.
UNITAR has developed the Women’s Leadership for Peace programme, which is the product of many years of experience working on the women’s empowerment-leadership-peacebuilding nexus. Over the years, UNITAR has not only seen first-hand the underrepresentation of women in formal and informal peace processes, but it has also received many requests from women and women-led organisations to provide training opportunities to reinforce efforts directed towards achieving gender equity and parity. The programme is designed to fill the identified gap in existing training programmes on women’s leadership in the peace and security fields, responding directly to the unique challenges faced by women in this space and recognising the importance of women’s meaningful participation in leadership roles and in the promotion of stable and lasting peace. The Women’s Leadership for Peace programme consists of a wide portfolio of activities and capacity building opportunities which, when combined, will provide women with an unrivalled set of experiences, knowledge, and skills to take the next steps in their career.
