Organizational Setting

The Department of Management (MT) provides a ‘platform of services’ that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA’s scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: “MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose”. Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States.

One of the main functions assigned to the IAEA by its Statute is to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information and the dissemination of knowledge in the nuclear field among Member States. To facilitate the effective exchange and dissemination of information relevant to the IAEA’s work and mandate, the Division of Conference and Document Services coordinates and supports the implementation of these activities for its users and clients, both internal and external, by organizing meetings and conferences, issuing documents in the six official
IAEA languages, i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and editing, printing and distributing publications.

The French Translation Section is one of six translation sections in the Division providing translations of a broad range of documents and
publications into the official languages. It is responsible for translating documents into French. High quality translations are required and often
short deadlines have to be met.

Main Purpose

As a member of a team led by the Section Head, the Translation Assistant processes, formats, incorporates changes in and proofreads documents translated into French. The Translation Assistant is responsible for the final quality control of technically complex and sensitive texts ensuring accuracy and completeness before dispatching and, where appropriate, uploading them on the IAEA’s website. The Translation Assistant provides technical guidance to other support staff in the Section.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Process, proofread and finalize highly sensitive and technically complex texts in French in accordance with established quality control guidelines, ensuring accuracy and consistency of texts by checking spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax and completeness against the original English texts.

Check and format complex texts containing tables, charts, figures, diagrams, references to ensure accurate presentation.

Create, where appropriate, the final version of texts in PDF and/or other formats as required for dispatching, archiving and uploading on the IAEA’s website.

Coordinate the work of support staff to ensure efficient processing of documentation.

Provide technical guidance to support staff in processing complex documents and perform quality control of such documents

Assign translation jobs, follow-up on their deadlines and prepare records to keep track of them.

Work with computer assisted translation tools (CAT) and desktop publishing software, participate in testing new tools and software, provide feedback and prepare own proposals to improve them.

Engage with clients, collaborate with other language teams to find common solutions on formatting and layout of translated text.

Train and mentor new and temporary support staff. Keep track of and record temporary support staff work for the contract payment purposes.

Support Section Head by taking necessary administrative actions related to the recruitment of support staff in the Section and preparing tests and evaluation criteria.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

Completed secondary education.

Successful completion of the French Translation Section’s language test.

Perfect command of French as mother tongue or principal language of education

Minimum of five years of relevant working experience, preferably in translation services of an international organization.

Ability to establish priorities and respect deadlines.

Ability to work independently and accurately under time pressure for extended periods.

Excellent oral and written command of French and English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 56137 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks’ annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
