JOB PURPOSE

To translate, localise, edit and revise Amnesty International’s texts in coordination with the other translators in the language team, applying the quality assurance protocols defined by the Coordinator of the Arabic language team and the Head of Translation and Language Strategy. To revise Amnesty’s texts translated by external translators, ensuring the quality of the deliverables. To liaise with and coordinate the work of external translators as required. To actively contribute to the deployment and continuous uptake of translation technology in the Arabic translation team and its external translators, thus fostering efficiency and improved productivity of high-quality translations.

Please note this role can be in London or Madrid. We can offer circa EUR 34,276 per annum (If based in Madrid).

ABOUT YOU

As a native Arabic speaker with fluency in English, you will have experience in translating documents for Arabic audiences, with excellent writing and editing skills across different types of output including media, social media and videos. You will have a keen interest in the field of translation, taking initiative to stay up to date with the evolution of language and changing industry standards and trends, and implementing innovative translation techniques.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Translate, edit, adapt and revise texts into the target language, ensuring that translations are accurately conveyed for the target audience, adhering to style guides and instructions of requesters.
  • Provide initial and on-going training to new and existing freelance translators on key concepts, terminology, style, conventions, etc., that are essential to the translation of Amnesty’s texts, as well as training on software use and procedures, which will enable freelance translators to deliver quality translations in the shortest time possible.
  • Upload translated content to Amnesty’s website as required to ensure content is available to the target audience.
  • To actively and meaningfully contribute to the full adoption and deployment of translation technology within the Arabic translation team, working closely with the rest of team members and under the guidance and support of the Translation Technology Lead.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in Translation, Foreign languages, Linguistics, Communication (or equivalent).
  • Native speaker of Arabic and fluent in English (fluency in other languages desirable).
  • Ability to grasp the meaning of Amnesty International texts and accurately convey it in Arabic.
  • Extensive experience in translating texts from English (additional source languages desirable) based on an understanding of Arabic-speaking audiences.
  • Proven expertise in utilizing state-of-the-art translation technology and processes, including CAT tools (e.g., memoQ), term bases, and translation management systems (TMS).
