This position is located in the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The Translator/Précis-writer reports to the Chief of the English Unit of the Documents and Publications Division. ECLAC is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Translator/Précis-writer will be responsible for the following duties: • Translates, subject to revision, documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations and the Commission, i.e. political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical, carrying out linguistic research as necessary for the performance of the work. • Edits, documents written in English covering the broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations and the Commission, especially economic and social development. This entails making changes in the text to improve style and presentation and, when necessary, making proposals regarding the organization of the material and the terminology used • Attends meetings as part of a team, takes notes either directly from statements delivered in the languages of competence or from the interpretation and subsequently uses the notes to produce or translate draft summary records, subject to revision. • Identifies new terminology material and submits it for consideration of the revisers. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
The United Nations Competitive Examination for English Translators is required. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in translation or in another relevant language field is required. Experience of translation in a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations Common System or international organizations (social, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical), with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area, is desirable Experience of translating high-level academic and economic texts, preferably for international organizations, is desirable. Experience of working with CAT tools is desirable.
Languages
A perfect command of English (as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination), which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. An excellent knowledge of Spanish (also as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination) is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
