The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region. This position is located in the Russian Language Unit, in the Conference and Documentation Services Section. The Section reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support. The incumbent reports to the Reviser.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Reviser, and overall supervision of the Chief of the Russian Language Unit, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions: • Translates (increasingly without requiring revision during the probationary period, if applicable, and then on a self-revising basis by the end of the probationary period; otherwise on a self-revising basis from the start of the appointment) texts and documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, • Makes effective use of relevant language technologies and tools and suggests improvements, which includes keying in and administration of translations directly in a text-processing software • Identifies new terminology material and submits it for approval. • Actively seeks to learn from feedback and develop own skills and knowledge relevant to the job, especially through self-study. • Undertakes cross-assignments to perform other language functions, increasingly without requiring guidance, if required. • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A first-level degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status. (Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant United Nations Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-Writers or the relevant combined United Nations Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, and Verbatim Reporters; this requirement will be waived for candidates who passed one of the relevant United Nations competitive examinations held before 2017 for Editors or Verbatim Reporters, subject to an assessment test to be conducted by the hiring manager as part of the Inspira selection process).

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in translation and use of standard computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and relevant language technologies, such as eLuna, or similar tools, is required. A proven experience in translating on a self-revision basis is desirable. Experience in the United Nations Common System or international settings is desirable.
Languages
A perfect command of Russian (as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination), which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. Excellent knowledge of English (as assessed in the relevant Competitive examination) is required. Knowledge of one other official language (also as assessed in the relevant Competitive Examination) is also required.

Special Notice
This is a temporary position and will be available for 3 months . If selected, an internal candidate will be on temporary assignment to the post; an external candidate will initially be offered a temporary appointment. Any extension of appointment is subject to satisfactory performance and continued availability of the post.
